Quick, what do the following phrases bring to mind: Alaskan husky? Mush? If images of a body builder living in Anchorage and a bowl of hot cereal spring to mind, I suggest you stop reading now. But if snippets of Robert Service poetry or a passage from "White Fang" sprang to mind, you ought to know about Washakie Outfitting. The ingredients that make up this family-owned business are simple: snow copious amounts of it for months at a time and lots of wide-open country. But the finished product is extraordinary.

ritish Columbia winters bring out the true adventurer. There are many places to visit and explore; it's an excellent time to enjoy the snow covered silent backcountry. Sparkling snow blankets the county side, the blue sky reaches down to touch you and the distant mountains appear a hazy purple-gray in colour. The air is crisp, clean and so refreshing. Remote areas can be reached by cross-cou ntry and telemark skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing and of course dog sledding. Dog sledding is quickly gaining popularity, in part because this type of transportation fun does not create air or noise pollution. Imagine yourself in a comfortable sled as a team of dogs takes you gliding silently over hill and dale. Miles of snow covered rolling hills and treed meadows make for hours of enjoyable dog sledding. The various regions offer different types of terrain, so every trail is new and exciting. Through out the province there are numerous dog sled operators offering rides by the hour, day and over-night camping adventure packages.

Harnessing the Huskies:
Dog Sledding in Montana
Answering the Call of the Wild Montana Dog Sled Events Companies Offering Dog Sled Adventures Answering the Call of the Wild Admit it. After reading "The Call of the Wild" for the first time in high school, you secretly yearned to hitch a team of huskies and yell "mush." Well, you can do just that in Montana. The popularity of dog sledding has been growing across the country in the last few years, and more and more companies in Big Sky Country are putting their winters on paws. You can find everything from quick half-day sled outings with a guide to multi-night resort adventures with planned dog sled itineraries. And no, you don't need to bring a pack of 12 huskies along; you'll find trained teams and everything else you need to get started at any of the companies listed below. Montana Dog Sled Events If the thought of trying to control a dozen yipping huskies seems a bit overwhelming, you can always do the next best thing: watch someone else try to control them. Montana has become an epicenter for high-profile dog sled races and events, including the Seeley Lake 100/200 Sled Dog Race and the Race to the Sky. The Seeley-Lincoln 100/200 is a 104/207-mile race is used as a ‘warm-up’ for the Race to the Sky and is also a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest Dog Sled Races in Alaska. Dog care, not speed, is the race’s emphasis, with a mandatory 4-hour camping stop at the halfway point. Lots of fun for mushers and spectators!. The race starts in Seeley Lake on Saturday afternoon and offers excellent opportunities for spectators. The teams will be available for viewing on Saturday afternoon. There is a four-hour campout at Monture Creek on Saturday night. The 100-mile race will end on Sunday morning in Lincoln at Hi-Country Beef Jerky. This will also be the turn-around point for the 200-mile race. The 200-mile teams will be there for four hours before returning to Seeley Lake. Hi-Country will also be a good spectator site on Sunday morning.

Dogsledding First things first: "Mush!" comes from the French Canadian "Marché!" meaning "Walk!" And no, real sled dog drivers don’t use the word. Instead, they use such commands as "Gee!" (Right) "Haw!" (Left) "Hike!" or the more prosaic "All right!" But you have ample opportunity to learn all this in Jackson Hole, home to some of the strongest, most experienced sled drivers (and dogs) in the world. Here you can take a lap around the valley floor, embark on a full day’s journey to a hot springs pool, or even enjoy an overnight trip to a yurt (a backcountry hut). You can even learn to drive the dogs yourself. "Hike!" Featured Web Sites Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog Tours

http://www.exploringthenorth.com/dog/sledding.html
Dog Sledding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan What is it like to dog sled? Join the mushers of the Upper Peninsula for a dogsledding adventure. You are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan As you stand on the runners of the dog sled, looking in amazement at the very excited dogs that are about to pull you down the trail, you begin to wonder..Just what have I gotten myself into? These dogs are psyched-and based on how the sled is bouncing around-strong, too. You get a little comfort knowing you will not be alone on the trail. Your guide will be ahead with his own team. Suddenly, your guide turns around and gives what you think is the thumbs-up signal with his fur-mittened hand, and like a shot he is gone. Your dogs are screaming to join their kennel mates on the trail. You lift your foot off the brake, and without warning, you can't believe how fast you are going down this narrow chute through the trees. The loud barking and excitement at the hook up are behind you. The dogs don't make a sound while they are running. Trees are flashing past you in a blur, seemingly close enough to reach out and tear off your parka. You vaguely remember something the guide said about trying not to hit the trees. You've made it the first half-mile and turn onto a straight, wide trail. Even though the dogs are still running quickly you remember that you are supposed to breathe, and begin to relax a little. Further down the trail the dogs slow to a nice trot and things seem to be under control.
