9. Homological algebra
Above we used the undefined product . It is defined by A*B = Tor_1(A,B) , the torsion product of A and B . It is zero when either A or B is free, and we have A*B = B*A Just for completeness the definitions. A resolution of A is an exact sequence ...-> C_i -> ... -> C_0 -> A -> . It is called free when all are free. Free resolutions exist, and any two free resolutions are chain homotopic. Now Tor_i(A,B) = H_i(C tensor B) is independent of the choice of free resolution C (And dually, Ext^i(A,B) = H^i(Hom(A,B)) Over a principal ideal domain one finds Tor_i(A,B) = Ext^i(A,B) = for i > 1 . Also, Tor_0(A,B) = A tensor B , so the only torsion module of interest here is A*B Next Previous Contents

Homological Algebra (MAS 6396)
Tuesday and Thursday, 14:00 - 15:20 p.m., SE 215
Often Homological Algebra is considered as a tool that provides a unified language to problems in various fields in Algebra and in Algebraic Topology and that offers various kinds of constructions which are helpful in proofs (e.g. the ``Diagram Chasing''). The focus of this course is on applications: We introduce homological methods (of course), and see how they work in the context of linear algebra problems, like the study of systems of linear maps, or of subspace problems.
    Preliminaries:
      Matrix Theory
    Topics:
Categories and functors, projective objects and projective presentations, the Ext-functor, semisimple and hereditary rings, duality and transpose, source maps and sink maps, Auslander-Reiten quivers. Here is a part of my manuscript for downloading: Section 1: k-categories ( dvi ps ), 1/10/01, Section 2: Equivalence and Duality ( dvi ps , Section 3: Abelian Categories dvi ps Section 4: Projective Objects dvi ps Section 5: The Transpose ( dvi ps Section 6: Finite Representation Type ( dvi ps
    Literature:
The following books on Homological Algebra, some taken from our library, can be found in my office (come and read ! ). I intend to use the book by Auslander, Reiten and Smaloe for part of the course as a textbook.

lecture
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. K. W. Roggenkamp Institute: Mathematik B 3 Days, Time and Place: Mo 9.45 - 11.15 We 9.45 - 11.15 Exercises: by appointment Part: Advanced-Studies, Diplom: Field No. 2, 3, Lehramt: Field No. 2, 3. Topics: Homological algebra is the categorical basis for the various algebraic constructions in algebra, geometry and topology. General homology and cohomology theories will be derived which will then be applied in topology and algebra (Lie algebras and groups). The techniques learned here are mandatory for further lectures in the areas of algebraic geometry, differential geometry, functional analysis and topology. The following topics will be treated in the course of this lecture: Categorical description of kernels, cokernels, products, coproducts, pullbacks, pushouts, exact sequences; fuctors such as the Hom-fuctor and the functor of the tensor product as well as their derived functors Ext and Tor, cohomology of Lie algebras, groups and algebras, stable equivalences, derived categories. Literature: Requirements: Linear Algebra I, II
