The work was carried out under the supervision of: Prof. Moshe H. Mintz and Prof. Levy Kornblit Lecturer identification: B.Sc. (1989-1993) and Ph.D. in the straight curse (1994-2000) in the Department of Material Engineering, BGU. During the last 7 years worked as a researcher in the NRCN (in addition to the Ph.D. studies). Abstract In this work series of alloys with the compositions TiCr ~2-X Mn X X 1) were prepared and characterized (Laves phases C14, C15 and C36). Their reaction with hydrogen were studied by performing pressure-composition (p-c) isotherms within the temperature range 193-433K and pressure range up to 1,000 atm H or D . The metal-hydrogen reaction was analyzed using classical thermodynamics (yielding D H and D S), taking into account the non-ideality of the gas phase. Analytical expressions for the p-c isotherms can be derived from a simplified statistical thermodynamic model. Such analytical expressions have been fitted to the experimental isotherms. The fitting results are two energy-related parameters, the pairwise H-H nearest neighbor interaction parameter, h , and the effective H-lattice interaction parameter, e eff , which includes both, the non-vibrational (electronic and elastic) contributions and the vibrational contribution. 1.1 Introduction
Physical chemistry is a broad subject and no simple definition can do it justice. For our purposes we can consider physical chemistry as that field that studies the physical laws and processes underlying chemistry. It is a subject that covers many subjects. Of these our primary concern in this part of the course is classical thermodynamics. Classical thermodynamics is the study of the thermal properties of chemical systems at equilibrium. It is called classical because it, like geometry, is based on axioms, postulates, and definitions. It is a deductive science whose conclusions hold true in the physical world as long as its axioms and postulates are true in the physical world. This approach is at once very powerful and very limiting. Classical thermodynamics knows nothing really about atoms and molecules, nothing about quantum mechanics, and nothing about subatomic phenomena at all. On the other hand, classical thermodynamics must be consistent with all of those. And, since they are the most fundamental building blocks of chemistry, it must be possible to deduce classical thermodynamics from them. And it is.     Bimalendu N. Roy’s “Fundamentals of classical and statistical thermodynamics” is a broad exploration of subject area, extending from the very basics such as energy and temperature to a range of more involved and conceptually difficult ideas. The author aims this book at junior undergraduates, with some sections being more appropriate for senior undergraduates and post-graduates. I feel that this aim is achieved, and the book might well serve as a core text over a full degree course, and would provide teachers with an excellent reference text. The book generally flows logically from the basics to rather advanced ideas, with the occasional occurrence of unexplained terms that are to be visited later in the text. At the end of the book there are a number of helpful appendices, including extensive tables of enthalpies of formation, free energies and standard entropies (although there is some repetition of some values in different tables), and an appendix detailing some useful mathematical tools.
