Sound statistical and other methodological approaches are needed to assure that cancer studies meet their objectives and that efficient designs and methods of analysis are used. At times, an innovative design or analytical approach opens entirely new avenues of discovery. The Biostatistics Branch develops new statistical methods and data resources to strengthen observational studies, intervention trials, and laboratory studies of cancer. Efforts are made to consult and actively collaborate on all phases of an investigation, from initial feasibility assessments to work on study design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation. The Branch provides information on cancer rates to generate etiologic leads and to assist in study design. It also plans and conducts independent and collaborative descriptive and analytic studies of cancer etiology.

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program (EBP) conducts independent and collaborative epidemiologic and biostatistical investigations to identify the distribution, characteristics, and causes of cancer in human populations. These aims are accomplished through a series of integrated programs of research, including studies of:
  • demographic variation in the occurrence of cancer by age, race, gender, geography, and over time (i.e., descriptive studies);

    Biostatistics and Epidemiology The overall mission of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology is to provide students with strong analytic and quantitative skills needed to conduct professional level public health research, disease surveillance, program evaluation, and public health practice. The Biostatistics and Epidemiology programs are complementary both academically and professionally. These related fields are based on the mathematical, natural, and social sciences. The department meets its mission by preparing public health professionals who will work to improve the health of the public. The academic program includes a base of theoretically sound courses complemented by hands-on research experiences and public health agency practice experiences.

    Interdepartmental Group in BIOSTATISTICS
    University of California, Berkeley Biostatistics is a discipline primarily concerned with the statistical analysis of data generated from biological problems, particularly in the areas of health and disease. The field focuses on development and application of statistical methods to provide better understanding and solutions to problems in such areas as biology, medicine, epidemiology and environmental health. The Interdepartmental Group in Biostatistics on the Berkeley campus of the University of California offers graduate programs leading to the MA and PhD degrees. These programs are appropriate for the student who has either a mathematical or statistical background with a major interest in the biomedical sciences or a degree in the biological sciences with a major interest in mathematics and statistics. The degree programs offer training in the theory of statistics and biostatistics, computer implementation of analytic methods and opportunity to use this knowledge in areas of biological/medical research. The curriculum is offered principally by Statistics and Biostatistics faculty drawn from both the Department of Statistics and the School of Public Health on the Berkeley campus. In addition to reading the material presented here, prospective applicants may want to visit the Public Health and Statistics web sites to gain information on the range of resources available to Biostatistics students.
