MARCUS AURELIUS
(Marcvs Aelivs Avrelivs Vervs)
Imperador - 161 a 180 d.C.

April 20 ~  A Happy Life Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Remember t h i s - that very l i t t l e is needed to make a happy life." ~ Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121-180) was born on this day. His daily musings, Meditations , were transformed into the philosophy of stoicism. Inspired by the Greek slave Epictetus Discourses , Marcus Aurelius wrote of the importance of man being in tune with his inner nature and called that God dwelling within each of us, "fate." "Our life is what our thoughts make it," he said, believing in free will and living simplistically. Marcus Aurelius ruled at a time of war , conspiracy, and corruption. His diary , a disjointed collection of meditations , helped build his character and sustain him during his challenges. With Stoicism, Marcus Aurelius believed in living with nature , in unity and order. With a philosophy similar to Taoism , he saw the external world as an interaction between opposites. Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current." he observed. "No sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away." Stoicism is named after the mural-decorated porch, stoa poikele, which was found in Athens' Agora. Students would meet there to discuss ideas and search for the moral and intellectual

Marcus Aurelius
Roman emperor, best known for his Meditations on Stoic philosophy, AD 121–180
Never esteem anything as of advantage to you that will make you break your word or lose your self-respect. How ridiculous and unrealistic is the man who is astonished at anything that happens in life. Everything that happens happens as it should, and if you observe carefully, you will find this to be so. Whatever may befall thee, it was preordained for thee from everlasting Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one. How much trouble he avoids who does not look to see what his neighbour says or does or thinks How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it. And thou wilt give thyself relief, if thou doest every act of thy life as if it were the last. People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. Never esteem anything as of advantage to you that will make you break your word or lose your self-respect. Consider that thou dost not even understand whether men are doing wrong or not, for many things are done with a certain reference to circumstance. And, in short, a man must learn a great deal to enable him to pass a correct judgment on another man's acts.

Gjerning

He was a nephew of Faustina, the wife of Antoninus Pius Commodus . Devoted to his duty and humanitarian in his conception of it, Marcus Aurelius was concerned with improving living conditions for the poor, particularly minors. He was always lenient with political criminals and tried to decrease the brutality at gladiatorial shows. He did, however, persecute the Christians, whom he regarded as natural enemies of the empire. His Meditations, available in several translations, expresses with great beauty and humanity a philosophy with a Stoic basis. The virtuous character of Marcus Aurelius is revealed in his letters to his tutor Fronto See biography by A. R. Birley (1966); study by J. H. Oliver (1970).

Meditations Books One and Two. Every morning we should say to ourselves, today I welcome this arrogant person and this dishonest
http://www.innersports.org/MarcusAurelius.htm
Meditations: Books One and Two Every morning we should say to ourselves, "today I welcome this arrogant person...and this dishonest person...and this angry person." For regardless of their attitudes, these people are our brothers. They are not evil, for they act out of ignorance. If I attack a brother, I am attacking all my brothers. To be angry with a brother is to be angry with myself. It is not the body, nor the personality that is the true self. The true self is eternal. Even on the point of death we can say to ourselves, "my true self is free. I cannot be contained." Do activities break you from your peace? If so, give yourself some quiet time to return to your path. If necessary, change directions or take up a new activity. The most important thing in life is to have a focus and purpose. This moment may be your last on earth; remember this, and choose every thought and act carefully. Remember, too, that to leave the earth is nothing to be afraid of, for the nature of the Universe is eternal and good. The present is the only thing of value. In the present everything is equal, and everyone is equal.

We do not deem ourselves wretched enough to find ourselves wretched in the stoic manner!" Nietzsche Here again, I depart from form and begin with a quotation from other than Marcus Aurelius. A 19th-century German philosopher seems an unlikely choice. He is not, for Nietzsche began as a student of the classics, and of philology in particular. He also lived at a time of the end of empires, making the Emperor's world-view naturally sympathetic. Nietzsche ended by rejecting Stoicism, however. As we see above, he sees it as a symptom, not a cure, of the disease of the modern West. Is it, really? I think not. Nietzsche's ideal of of a joyous affirmation of all becoming may be attainable for his Ubermenschen. It is not for the average man. The mastery over self is, however, attainable. Why not, with Marcus Aurelius and contra Nietzsche, begin with the transformation of the self? Self-possession (0 comments) Menu create account
