http://www.meridiangallery.org/oliveros.htm
Pauline Oliveros composer, performer and humanitarian is a major pioneer in American Music. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual teaching and meditation she has created a body of work with great breadth of vision. Honored with awards and grants her music has been played throughout the world. Whether she is performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., or in an underground cave. Oliveros' commitment to interaction with the moment is unchanged. Pauline Oliveros has built a loyal following through her concerts, recordings, publications and musical compositions that she has written for soloists and ensembles in music, dance, theater and interact companies. She has also provided leadership within the music community from her early years as Director of the Tape Music Center at Mills College and as Director of the Center for Music Experiment during her 14 year tenure at the University of California, San Diego. She has acted in advisory capacity for organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council for the Arts and many private foundations. Oliveros has been vocal about representing the needs of individual artists, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts and promoting cooperation and good will among people. Her concept of "Deep Listening" is widely influential. She is currently visiting professor at Mills College in Oakland.

Pauline Oliveros
With a long and intense career that spawned a number of mas- terpieces, Pauline Oliveros has achieved the reputation of being one of the most prominent and influential composers of our time. She now resides in Kingston, New York, where her Foundation is also based. The Pauline Oliveros Foundation inc, a non-profit organization to help avantagarde artists develop their ideas, is a difficult task, but nonetheless she seems to enjoy every moment of it:

"The Hudson Valley is ideal for practicing creative arts. It's a rural environment, dotted by victorian homes, surrounded by natural beauty. There's quiet and silence. At the same time it is not far from the cultural centres of New York and Boston. The house we chose has superb acoustics and is structured ideally to think about and organize music. The Foundation, that was born in 1985, when the Creative Music Studio in West Hurley was shut down, has a budget of about $200,000, raised through grants from government and state institutions, individual donations, concerts, tours, catalogs, workshops, lectures, consultation, admissions. We have three programmes: literature, music and performance arts. And we have already received five commissions. Our mission is to create and disseminate new works. So around the Foundation we now have a community of artists, which also includes poets and playwrights." Your career is a monument to American art, and cannot be summarized in a few lines, but what are the essentials of your beginnings?

PAULINE OLIVEROS - Electronic works (PD 04)
Cover by Clive Graham.
Released 1997
I of IV was made in July 1966 at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio and was first released by CBS alongside works by 2 other young composers - 'Come out' by Steve Reich and 'Night music' by Richard Maxfield . It is really only in recent years (born out of the more radical elements of dance music, electronica and ambient music) that music like this is being rediscovered by a growing number of people interested in all manner of experimental electronics. T rack 2 was also made in the summer of 1966 at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio, and track 3 was made at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1965. The 3 pieces on this CD are all live experiments, which at the simplest level use either an array of oscillators or filters, a mixer and one spool of tape feeding a series of (variously set up) stereo tape machines. Long delay lines, pile ups of noise and rich sonorities are the stuff of this music. The third piece also samples a chunk of Pucini's 'Madame Butterfly' , which only makes this music seem even more contemporary.

Pauline Oliveros
Pauline Oliveros describes her life as a composer, performer and humanitarian as being about opening her own and others´ sensibilities to the many facets of sound. Since the 1960´s her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual have placed her on the forefront of the international contemporary music scene. Many credit her with founding present day meditative music. Her work combines an emphasis on musicianship, attentional strategies, and improvisational skills. John Rockwell named her work "Bye Bye Butterfly"as one of the most significant of the 1960´s. During the 80´s she was honored with a retrospective at Kennedy Center. She composed the original music and sound for "Njinga the Queen King", a play with music and pageantry by playwright lone, which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1993. Her work is available on over 20 recordings.

Pauline Oliveros "Listening involves directing attention and interpreting what is heard. Deep Listening is listening in as many ways as possible to all that can possibly be heard all of the time. Deep Listening is exploring the relationships between any and all sounds. Hearing is passive. We can hear without listening. This is the state of being tuned outunaware of our acoustic ecologyunaware that the fluttering of a butterfly's wings has profound effect near and in the far reaches of the universe. We can hear sounds inwardly from memory or imagination or outwardly from nature or from civilization. Listening is actively directing one's attention to what is heardnoticing and directing the interaction and relationships of sounds and modes of attention. We hear in order to listen. We listen in order to interpret ourselves and our world and to experience meaning. The ear tells the eye where to look." Pauline Oliveros, from the Summer 1997 Deep Listening Newsletter

Pauline Oliveros Avant-garde composer Pauline Oliveros pioneered the concept of Deep Listening, an aesthetic based upon principles of improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation designed to inspire both trained and untrained performers to practice the art of listening and responding to environmental conditions in solo and ensemble situations. Born in Houston, Texas on May 20, 1932, Oliveros received her first musical instruction from her mother and grandmother equally inspired by the sounds of nature, she committed to pursuing a career in music early in life, studying composition at San Francisco State College during the early '50s and playing french horn in an improvisational group which also included pianist Terry Riley . Later recognized primarily for her prowess on the accordion, during the mid-'60s she served as the first director of the Tape Music Center at Mills College, followed by a 14-year teaching stint at the University of California at San Diego which concluded upon her relocation to Kingston, New York in 1981. In the intervening years Oliveros established herself among the most original thinkers in contemporary music, known initially for the "Sonic Meditations," her earliest attempts at absorbing environmental sounds into the musical process. The same concept was at the heart of the Deep Listening series, a collection of 30 pieces composed between 1971 and 1990. During the mid-1980s, she also established the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, which spread the Deep Listening gospel through recordings, lectures and retreats.
