The Classical period composer, James Hook, is known to students of the piano for his charming keyboard Sonatinas , which for many young pianists are the first pieces to be studied in Classical style, as prerequisites to the works of Kuhlau, Clementi, and Beethoven. Unfortunately, apart from these small gems, his compositions remain relatively obscure. However, Hook was a prolific composer of songs (more than 2000), several operas, an oratorio, a large quantity of chamber music, keyboard sonatas, and concertos for various instruments. Some of his compositions, conceived as light-hearted works for public entertainment, are now gaining greater attention through revived performances and recordings, and a new appreciation for his practical, but only occasionally profound, style is gaining a wider audience. He was born June 3, 1746 in the Norwich parish of Saint John, Maddermarket, as the son of James Hook, a razor-grinder and cutlery maker. Although he was born with a club foot, early surgical precedures improved this condition to the point that he was able to walk, albeit in a limping manner throughout his life. Hook showed remarkable musical talent at an early age, playing the harpsichord at four years old and performing concertos in public by the time he was six. Among his teachers was Thomas Garland, the Norwich Cathedral organist, and before he was eight, James Hook had composed songs and his first opera (now lost). Hook's father died in 1758, and his mother carried on the cutlery business. From November 1756, fairly regular advertisments appeared in the

There were around 2.93 million cable telephony subscribers in 2001, more than the 2.5 million most analysts were predicting, according to a study by Allied Business Intelligence, an Oyster Bay, New York-based research firm. That number will almost double by the end of 2002, reaching 5.2 million subscribers, the study predicts. Allied Business Intelligence attributes the unexpected growth to the promise of cost savings for cable companies as well as the convenience of converging television with high-speed Internet and telephone services. The report is based on discussions with more than 30 cable operators and equipment makers. "Whereas most technologies haven't met expectations over the past year, cable telephony has," said John Chang, analyst with Allied Business Intelligence.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury has cleared James Brown of sexual harassment charges against a former female employee, but ruled the soul belter's company must still face the music for wrongfully terminating her. Lisa Ross Agbalaya, a 36-year-old former model and mother of three who served as the West Coast president of James Brown Enterprises, sued the legendary singer for $1 million, accusing him of harassing her and making unwanted sexual advances when she visited his home in Augusta, Georgia, in 1999. a d v e r t i s e m e n t The suit, filed in May 2000, claimed, " 'Sex Machine' is more than simply a title to one of James Brown's many hit records; it would also appear to be a description of James Brown the man." He was the first writer to introduce a modern and European tone into belles lettres, and the first to refresh the sources of native thought from the springs of antique and Renaissance poetry. His lyrics and his pastoral of Granida are strongly marked by the influence of Tasso and Sannazaro; his later tragedies belong more exactly to the familiar tone of his native country. But high as Hooft stands among the Dutch poets, he stands higher—he holds perhaps the highest place—among writers of Dutch prose. His historical style has won the warmest eulogy from so temperate a critic as Motley, and his letters are the most charming ever published in the Dutch language. After Vondel, he may on the whole be considered the most considerable author that Holland has produced. Hoof t’s poetical and dramatic works were collected in two volumes (1871, 1875) by P. Leendertz. His letters were edited by B. Huydecoper (Leiden, 1738) and by van Vloten (Leiden, 4 vols., 1855). The best original account of Floolt is given by G. Brandt in his Leven van P. C. Hoof!
