Tiffany did his important work during the period now known as the American Renaissance - 1890 to 1920. He excelled in many aspects of the decorative arts, but his forte was stained glass, a medium he revolutionized. While most of his contemporaries were rooted in the past, producing only traditional bible scenes for church windows, Tiffany was instrumental in helping the public to accept that beautiful scenes from nature also belonged in churches. His windows abound with plants and flowering trees and his landscapes realistically convey the stillness of the forest or the gentleness of a deer drinking at a brook. Tiffany's angels and biblical figures also feel very real, depicting the emotions and experiences of the subject.

J UST F RIENDS V IOLIN S AILBOAT Born in Venice on May 30, 1948, Dino Rosin was taken by his family while still an infant to live on Murano, the glass producing island in the Venice lagoon. On leaving school at the age of 12, Dino began work straight away with much passion and dedication as an apprentice at one of the isle's oldest and most renowned glass factories, "Barovier e Toso". His love for glass working gave him the chance to quickly earn a reputation, his energetic spirit letting him express his enthusiasm when modeling this unique material. In 1963, Dino joined his brothers, Loredano and Mirco, already owners of the glass studio "Artvet". Then 15 years old, Dino started working with his brother Loredano who was already gaining success as a new master glass worker. It was than that Egidio Costantini, owner of the "Fucino degli Angeli" (Angel's Furnace) suggested that they come to collaborate with the most famous artists of the time: Picasso, Chagall, Jean Cocteau, and Le Corbusier, to mention only a few of the leading names who had frequented his furnace-workshop. The new idea entailed the recreation of these artists' works in glass through the use of wholly new techniques and working methods. Putting to use the process of Calcedonia , the ancient historical glass recipe, allowed Loredano to start out on prestigious projects and Dino to refine his talents through working alongside his brother creating hand made sculpture of modern style and design.

Both artists' interest in opalescent glass began in the mid-1870s, but lack of suitable glass for use in windows delayed the successful completion of an opalescent window for several more years. Opalescent glass was made only in pressed glass factories and so was not available in flat sheets. In order to obtain glass that could be used in windows, La Farge had gone to small flintware manufacturers in Brooklyn and ordered custom made pieces. Tiffany followed suit very shortly after. La Farge filed a patent application on November 10, 1879, a week after the exhibition of his window for Dr. Richard Derby's Long Island estate (Fig. 3), which had been hailed by the newspapers as "the first application of a new material [opalescent glass] to windows." Patent No. 224,831 was granted on February 24, 188O for a "Colored-Glass Window" to be composed of panes of opalescent and colored glass: The object of my invention is to obtain opalescent and iridescent effects in glass windows, to insure the translucency of the glass used therein and to lessen complete transparency; which is a great fault in ordinary glass windows, the translucency of the class of glass employed by me softening the light, and, by reason of its unevenness of structure and formation, the direct passage of rays of light and the tendency of the said rays to focus are prevented.
