MHL 341 Music History This is the first listening example from the Baroque era. The immediately preceding example directly leads to this one: Le nuove musiche barroco , an irregularly shaped pearl, which was used to describe works of art that later centuries considered grotesque, misshapen, and decadent Renaissance style. The term is now used without derogatory meaning to describe a certain style of music composed during the century and a half from 1600 until the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. Only the French decline to have had a Baroque period. French writers claim that French music went directly from Renaissance to classic style. In any case the Baroque style was primarily an invention of Italian composers and Italian composers and musicians dominated the musical scene in Europe well into the 18th century. Le nuove musiche basso continuo , which is ALWAYS present in ensemble music of the Baroque period. The basso continuo Nevertheless, the notated melody line and notated bass line indicate a characteristic of Baroque music that is not to be missed and is usually called Polarity of Sound. Polarity, as in North and South Poles, means that you often hear in Baroque music a strong top melody or melodies and a strong bass line. Thus ultimately you find the contradiction: the desire to avoid polyphony as in motet and madrigal, produced monody with strong upper melody and not as lively bass melody; but before long that bass melody was as important as the upper melody or melodies, and the basic texture of Baroque music remains exactly what it was in the Renaissance period: polyphonic.

OTOS edizioni musicali Welcome Giulio Caccini Italian composer and singer. Caccini was born in Rome, but at an early age he was taken to Florence as a singer. He was a member of Bardi's Camerata in the 1570s and the 1580s. In 1600 he was involved in providing music for the wedding festivities for Maria de'Medici and Henry IV of France. His setting of Chiabrera's Il rapimento di Cefalo was the main event, and was less of an opera than a large intermedio (see intermedi). He also provided some music for Peri's opera Euridice, and then made a hurried setting all of his own in order to publish it before Peri. Caccini claimed to have invented the recitiative style which had made opera possible, although he did not write any recitative for the stage until 1600 (after Peri's Dafne), and although his style was different to that used by other composers before and after him.
