Judge Hate-Good
Alexander Whyte (1836-1921) ‘Hear, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel... who hate the good and love the evil.’—Micah. THE PORTRAIT OF Judge Hate-good in The Pilgrim’s Progress is but a poor replica, as our artists say, of the portrait of Judge Jeffreys in our English history books. I am sure you have often read, with astonishment at Bunyan’s literary power, his wonderful account of the trial of Faithful, when, as Bunyan says, he was brought forth to his trial in order to his condemnation. We have the whole ecclesiastical jurisprudence of Charles and James Stuart put before us in that single satirical sentence. But, powerful as Bunyan’s whole picture of Judge Hate-good’s court is, it is a tame and a poor picture compared with what all the historians tell us of the injustice and cruelty of the court of Judge Jeffreys. Macaulay’s portrait of the Lord Chief Justice of England for ferocity and fiendishness beats out of sight Bunyan’s picture of that judge who keeps Satan’s own seal in Bunyan’s Book. Jeffreys was bred for his future work at the bar of the Old Bailey, a bar already proverbial for the licence of its tongue and for the coarseness of its eases. Jeffreys served his apprenticeship for the service that our two last Stuarts had in reserve for him so well, that he soon became, so his beggared biographer describes him, the most consummate bully that ever disgraced an English bench. The boldest impudence when he was a young advocate, and the most brutal ferocity when he was an old judge, sat equally secure on the brazen forehead of George Jeffreys.

tower. All his interests are now up there (Alexander Whyte, 18361921).We're to leave the prayer room and climb into the watchtower.
    http://www.mountzion.org/fgb/Spring93/FgbSP5-93.html
Prayer—Fervent, Persistent, Expectant Daniel Shanks It is certainly not without personal conviction this article is penned; for if ever there was one pointed out and disqualified from writing a piece on “prayer” — my name would surely surface. There are plenty of regrets in my life concerning a neglect of this holy ordinance. How many of our heads must hang with shame as we reflect upon past years of sinfully shirking our responsibilities in this most blessed means of grace? Definite prayer, though, is a must. It is a must if we would have our labours attended upon by the Spirit of God. It is a must if we would walk and commune with the living God. It is a must in daily deliverance from indwelling sin, from the enticements of the world, and the assaults of our adversary — “Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation” (Mark 14:38). Prayerlessness in the life will surely give rise to spiritual defeat and decline in the soul. Any attempt to justify its neglect is vain and foolish: “I don't know how to pray; I don't have time; my work is so demanding; my body is constantly in pain; God is a sovereign God, etc.” Many excuses fill our mouths for avoiding the throne of grace; yet even the best is nonetheless worthless. They're all lies. Honesty demands a true confession; and when you `shell down the corn,' what do we find? — pride lurking, deep-seated unbelief, and a cold heart of indifference. (Again, personal experience is the qualification claimed for setting such forth.) These are the real culprits; aren't they?

Its purpose is to address important issues of the day and to draw attention to worthwhile Christian and other literature in order to aid believers in Jesus Christ, especially pastors, missionaries and Bible college and seminary students to more effectively study and teach the Word of God. HE GAVE ...TEACHERS Who REALLY is the 'Faithful and Discreet Slave'? Second Edition By David Aspinall A Testimony about the Need for Teachers:
BEFORE the first serious cracks began to show in my faith in the Watchtower, God had already set me up for a soft fall. I was reading books I shouldn't have. Since all Jehovah's Witnesses officially believe that the only good food comes from the organization's table, I should never have started collecting non-JW books. But my years as a pioneer and trouble shooter (someone publishers take along on difficult calls) had taught me that the weapons the Watchtower supplies were inadequate. Books like Is the Bible the Word of God? and Aid to Bible Understanding, while impressive to theuneducated JW and Joe Public, didn't make much of a dent in the armour of half-educated unbelievers. Rather than dismiss such 'difficult' calls as goats,
One thing that became apparent fairly early in my book collecting: most of the best books I found defending the Bible were written by clergymen! This became especially important later on, when I had to look more closely at the original books of C.T Russell and Joseph Rutherford. Since the Watchtower no longer published any of these books by its founders, they made quite the trophy on my bookshelves, never failing to impress fellow Witnesses who visited. Of course, neither they nor I would likely ever read them anyway why read 'old light' when we had so much fine literature with up-to-date 'spiritual food'? Nevertheless, though my faith in the organization was as yet
