Specific Structures. 490 Summit Avenue: Addison Gardner Foster House [See note on Johnston for 476 Summit Avenue.] 495 Summit Avenue: Cyrus B. Thurston House , Built in 1881; Queen Anne/Italianate in style. The structure is a two story, 5131 square foot, four bedroom, four bathroom, one half-bathroom, brick house, with a detached garage. Cyrus B. Thurston was the owner of a carriage and agricultural implements business and later ran a cold storage warehouse on Eagle Street in St. Paul. Dr. Rudolph J. Schiffmann resided at this address from 1895 to 1905. 500 Summit Avenue: Dr. Cornelius Williams House , Built in 1904 (1881 according to Ramsey County property tax records); Georgian Revival in style; Thomas Holyoke, architect. The structure is a two story, 4560 square foot, seven bedroom, three bathroom, one half-bathroom, brick house, with a detached garage. The house was built for $8,000. The house is situated sideways on the lot because it was designed originally for a lot in downtown St. Paul, the site of the current Roy Wilkins Auditorium, and when Williams decided to build on Summit Avenue instead, in what previously was part of an apple orchard, he turned the house sideways rather than having the architect redesign it to better fit the lot. William A. Hardenbergh resided at this address in 1914.

In this issue of OED News we have an interesting account from Professor Richard Allsopp of the background to his recently published Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage , which highlights the difficulties of data collection and organization faced by all lexicographers. We also have a contribution from Stuart Silverstein, a writer and attorney who lives in Los Angeles, and is editor of Not Much Fun: the Lost Poems of Dorothy Parker (New York: Scribner, 1996). Mr Silverstein is a regular contributor to the OED , and has found hundreds antedatings in the works of Parker and her circle. We would also like to acknowledge valuable help from Japanese scholars: Professor Hideo Hirooka of Osaka has generously provided the project with copies of his books Dialects in English Literature and Thomas Hardy's Use of Dialect , as well as several articles by himself and Masako Hirooka.

In a rapidly growing consumer market for etiquette manuals during the nineteenth century, this is an example of a manual that attempts to reinforce the authority of its contents by suggesting legal foundations in its title as well as the qualifications of its author, in this case "A Gentleman."
