Media Beat
Announcing the P.U.-litzer prizes for 1995
By Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon It is time for us to announce the winners of the P.U.-litzer Prize for 1995. Competition was intense for the fourth annual P.U.-litzers, which recognize some of the stinkiest media performances of the past year. And now, the envelopes please. UN-AMERICAN JOURNALISM PRIZE Publisher Ted Owen, San Diego Business Journal According to his staff, publisher Ted Owen banned photos of individuals of certain ethnic backgrounds (including Vietnamese, Iraqis and Iranians) from prominent spots in his weekly business journal on the grounds that such visible coverage was "un-American." Asked about the ban by a local daily, Owen commented: "It is not a public debate how I run the newspaper." But after protests from area businesses, Owen renounced any photo-apartheid policy. PENTAGON PUNDIT AWARD Mark Shields, Steve Roberts, et al. This year, leading pundits Mark Shields, Steve Roberts, Gloria Borger, Haynes Johnson and Hedrick Smith received paychecks directly from Lockheed Martin the country's top military contractor to appear on a radio talk show in Washington. Lockheed Martin sees value in funding influential pundits across the media's narrow political spectrum. Meanwhile, media "debates" about budget-balancing concentrate on cuts aimed at seniors and the poor, but not the Pentagon. by Steve Silberman 21 July 1997
Suppose Pathfinder landed on the rock-strewn plain of Ares Vallis - and was unable to transmit pictures back to Earth, because random eddies in the bitstream garbled the images into static. Suppose a single speck of dust could turn the music on your favorite CD into a speaker-shredding blast of noise, or the smallest error on your computer's hard drive meant that you couldn't open your files. We live in an analog world of grit, less-than-perfect floppy disks, and noisy telephone lines, yet many of our information-age appliances - from fax machines to DAT recorders to DVDs - are able to read and transmit data with digital accuracy. How do they do it? Part of the answer lies in the Reed-Solomon codes, a strategy for the correction of errors in binary signals proposed in 1960, in an academic quarterly called the Journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

$6,500 A Month To Treat One AIDS Child
By Danielle Martin
Steve Solomon, executive secretary of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) yesterday severely criticised the tightfisted attitude of the public when it comes to donating money to charities. Solomon said while people readily acknowledged the good work done by volunteers at the society's Cyril Ross Home for children with HIV/AIDS in El Dorado, they were unwilling to contribute to the volunteers' salaries. The nursery, he said, always needs money and food."We got two washing machines when we needed one, because people want to give us things," Solomon said. "We need money to pay the staff monthly so the staff will be happy."He said many times his organisation has had to use a bank overdraft to ensure its workers are paid. He urged: "When you are thinking of the Cyril Ross nursery or any other institution, always think that there are people who are working there, people who are running the place and we have to pay them. They are not asking for a big salary."Solomon was speaking at the launch of the Muhummad A Shabazz (MAS) Foundation and its website for children living with HIV/AIDS at the Crowne Plaza, Port-of-Spain.The non-profit organisation, named after a former Opposition Senator, aims to take care of the social and educational needs of children.

In fact, one last talk about Sophie is archived on the website. I've been asked by many of you to make Sophie's story available on the website, since my newspaper feature stories don't appear in Chicago. . . this piece about Sophie has, however, appeared all over America. Sophie was the most amazing gossip. Too bad I never understood a word. Meeting people or other dogs on the street, Sophie, a 12-year old German shepherd dog, launched into long stories, "Grrr…rrrr…rrrrrah…rroo…grrr…" Karen, Sophie's owner blamed one of our two dogs, Lucy. She claimed Sophie didn't have much to say until she began hanging out with her best friend, our miniature Australian shepherd (North American shepherd). Like many of her breed, Lucy is a little chatter box. She talks and talks. Karen lives two floors below us in a five story vintage building just east of Wrigley Field on Chicago's near north side. "I'd say, 'Lucy go see your best friend.' And that's just what she'd do. She'd fly down those two floors, with our other dog - a Brittany named Chaser running to keep up - and stop in front of Sophie and Karen's door. Lucy didn't exactly knock. She didn't have too. Instead, she sing, "Ahoo…whoo…awhoooo…." On the other side of the door, "Grrr…rrrr…rrrrah…."

Steve Solomon
- I try to make my work into my play. My father wished that one on me. Once in a moment of great sincerity he said that he only wanted me to accomplish one thing in life: that I would wake up each morning and look forward to what I had to do that daysomething he frequently failed to achieve himself. Work for him was mostly an unwanted duty done to support his family. Seeing what his ongoing anger and resentment over this did to him and our family, I resolved to do better myself. > Visit Soil And Health Library - In the Financial Statement page, Steve states 'So far, no person has donated any money to further these efforts, though many many people have written to me thanking me for making this library. I reckon that's the nature of the internet at this timeeveryone expects to get something for nothing.' -> Please consider helping his cause Mark Hurst http://www.goodexperience.com

O.C.C. should not to be held responsible for any non-Christian advertising shown! Orleans Christian Church History
The Orleans Christian Church found its beginnings in the efforts of Dr. E.D. Laughlin, who come to Orleans from Parke County Indiana in 1862. Worship was held in a good frame building with an original membership of about 25. There was really no organization until it's first building was erected and dedicated in 1867. The lot was purchased from Dr. Henry Lingle for $100, half of which he donated himself. Construction began in the spring of 1867 at a cost of $1200. The first elders were E.D. Laughlin, William Wright, Sr., and George Hon.
Our First Building The first preacher was James Matthew, who remained but a short time. Some of the other preachers who served in the first building were Moses Smith, L.B. Bray, Jonathon Staley and M.E.Hoon. In 1919, John W. Marshall took the pulpit ministry and under his leadership, the membership grew to a number that made a new and larger building necessary. Erection of a brick building on the present site began in April, 1920, with the cornerstone being laid in May. The dedication ceremonies were held November 20, 1920. Many features have been added during the passing years. In the fall of 1963 the educational wing was added; in 1970 the basement was remodeled into its present state, and a new roof, air conditioning and a parking lot were added; the auditorium and the overflow (area) were remodeled in 1985; and an elevator has been added.

Scuba Diving Trip Reports Since 1996
Since 1996 I have written trip reports about all travel related to scuba diving and marine life photography. Each trip report tries to provide the good, the bad, and the ugly so one can make an intelligent decision about whether following in my footsteps would be good for them. Keep in mind that each of us has different needs and one person's heaven can be another person's hell. In all cases, before I select a destination, I research it as well as I can. In general, I look for diving that is pristine which means in most cases that the location is difficult to get to for those of us in the USA. If a location were easy to get to, many people would frequent it and the diving would become less pristine over time.
