The Tracian Tomb in Kazanluk
The Tracian Tomb in Sveshtari The Horseman of Madara The Boyana Church in Sofia ... Useful Information BULGARIA TRYAVNA Although Tryavna is an old crafts' centre with no less than 140 listed buildings, it is not however a typical museum town, since its position on the mountain slopes has ensured its unspoiled beauty. The whole town exudes an air of the National Revival period. Wandering through the narrow streets one cannot help but notice the richly designed woodcarvings, which abound both inside and outside the houses. Besides the interesting exhibitions to be seen in the homes of National Revival figures such as Angel Kanchev, Petko and Pencho Slaveykov, is the Daskalov's House built in 1804, which has been turned into an ethnographic museum. The distinctive style of the 19th century Tryavna school can be viewed in the Museum of Icon Painting and Woodcarving, the architectural and historical ensembles The Old Square, P. R. Slaveikov street, Kachaunska neighbourhood and the place Tepavitsite, Skortsite village, the temples St. Archangel Michael and St. George. Festivals and Fairs The Great Koprivshtitza Folklore Festival
The Great Koprivshtitza Folklore Festival is Bulgaria's largest gathering of traditional musicians and singers and is a cross between a pop festival and a medieval fair. It is a sight that knows no equal: thousands of musicians and singers making the hillside above the picturesque village of Koprivshtitza their home for a few days. Coupled with this you have the colourful stalls of the traders and the thousands of visitors who come for the festival.

History and Culture
The territory of Bulgaria has been inhabited since the earliest historical times: the Stone Age and the Chalcolithic Age. Archaeological discoveries from that time have been made near Karlovo, in the region of the towns of Nova Zagora, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin, Sofia, Teteven, Troyan and in the Rhodope Mountains. The oldest gold treasure in the world, discovered near Varna, is dated to that time. During the Bronze Age the present-day Bulgarian lands were inhabited by the Thracians, mentioned for the first time by Homer. They were engaged in agriculture and stockbreeding, and left evidence of a rich culture (the Vulchitrun gold treasure). The first Thracian state unions emerged in the 11th-6th centuries BC, which flourished in the 7th-6th centuries BC. In the 1st century BC their lands were conquered by Rome, and after the 5th century AD they were incorporated in the Byzantine Empire. The Thracians were later gradually assimilated by the Slavs who settled in the Balkan Peninsula in the 6th century AD. In the second half of the 7th century, the Proto-Bulgarians - an ethnic community of Turkic origin - settled on the territory of the present-day Northeastern Bulgaria. In alliance with the Slavs they formed the Bulgarian State, which was recognised by the Byzantine Empire in 681 AD. Khan Asparouh stood at the head of that state and Pliska was made its capital.

I often heard people say, "she's hopping mad!"
Who knows. They might have been right.
I
If I decided to write about it now when it's still too early, when what happened is still close to me, it is because of the chaos in my mind. Memories unexpectedly rush into it, hundreds of them flooding back. They're in a state of confusion. I hope words will help me put things into order and thus help me get rid of the demons... I remember the frogs in Kurasawa's autobiography, I have the same feelings he had. I don't want to look in the mirror. But my wish to tame the demons is very strong...
I'm not going to use the diary I kept for the simple reason that most of the things recorded there are unpleasant - my daily encounters with "no's". I prefer to rely on my memory which has sifted things out. The mind's ability to forget selectively is one of the sources of our powers of creativity. The good remains, the bad is forgotten.
The things which I shall be writing about happened in the period between the summer of 1990 and the summer of 1997.

Pencho Slaveykov (1866 - 1912)

His contribution to the convergence of Bulgarian to world letters make this poet, columnist, translator and literary critic on of Bulgaria's most enduring literary classics. His character and writings left a powerful and enduring impression on Bulgarian intellectual development.
Major theme of the banknote's reverse side are Slaveykov's poems: the national epic "A Song of Blood", and a set of plates from his anthology "Epic Songs"; the facsimile shows a page of its first edition. The poet's intimate lyricism forms a second theme, represented by the "Dream of Joy" anthology, and a portrait of his great love - fellow poet Mara Belcheva. Background colour - brown.

India's Atomic Bomb and the World's Hypocrites
Mikhail Popkchev A week ago the Government of India announced that her scientists had successfully carried out five underground nuclear explosions. This, along with the development of missile-carriers meant that the national programme to create independent nuclear weapon was being executed well. World's reaction was at lightning speed. The G-7 leaders along with the President of Russia present at the Birmingham meeting discussed the theme of Indian atom out-of-the-agenda, and decided to punish the guilty student. What a demagogy, what a cynicism! But since demagogy and cynicism are becoming more frequent guests to the big politics, despite the talk about new millenium, new world order, globalisation and Americanisation, it is sensible to view without prejudice the pluses and minuses of the emergence of one more nuclear state. Of course, we are talking of a nuclear infant, but. its potential. for growth and strenghtening are enviable. Therefore, let us not underestimate it because of its late appearance and infant age. The theme of nuclear arms, politics and moral intertwne like the sycamore and the mountain ash in

Questionnaire: 175 pupils of the age between 11 and 15 were asked to fill in the questionnaire within the period of January 21 st , 2002 – February 11 th First, they were asked the question: "Do you think that the historical heritage of our people can be fundamental to the building up of the European self-confidence of the Bulgarian?" It turned out that all the pupils, without exception, were perfectly sure about the truth of that statement and so they provided positive answers ("Yes") to it. They must have had good reasons to do that taking into consideration the following undeniable facts:
    1. Bulgaria is one of the eldest European countries. It was founded in the year 681, 1320 years ago, as a political alliance of two ethnic groups – the Slavs and the Proto-Bulgarians, whereas the native Thracian and Illyrian tribes had been doomed to gradual assimilation even before that. 2. Even as far back as Classical Antiquity (about the 7 th c. BC) the Bulgarian were known as the people with a name of its own.

for outward and inward emancipation: a need most torturous for the intellectuals, indeed. So, if "there is hardly an ism of our times that has not attempted to adopt Thoreau..." , then it was the "anti-ism" to Bulgarian totalitarianism that provided most of the preconditions for Thoreau's reception in Bulgaria in the last communist decades and especially during our "velvet revolution" and immediately afterwards. , the title of an outstanding Bulgarian novel of the sixties, acquired a symbolic significance for the decades to come. With circumstances like these Thoreau could duly satisfy the urge for spiritual survival. Things being much more complicated, indeed, the fact remains that Civil Disobedience did slip into the publication flow of 1981 and appeared to be one of the first public announcements of the approaching change. Walden, however, never got among these translations until after the political change; with no Bulgarian translation available under totalitarianism, Thoreau's masterpiece acquired even an additional charm of a self-discovered book about self emancipation. Posttotalitarianism was to reveal later on the depths of this uniquely bred Thoreauvian renaissance.
