BULGARIAN LITERATURE: CROSSROAD AND CRUCIFIX Albena Bakratcheva web Let me first welcome you to our country. Each one of you has got one's own reason to choose exactly Bulgaria to be the place for spending a Fulbright year. I know how exciting and rewarding this year can be and should be. All of a sudden, though, this positive disposition was tragically marked by September 11th. Your visit was threatened, threatened was the very possibility for living in a peaceful, democratic, globalized world. You are here now; the possibility has been restored. And all of us realize now that the idea of Fulbright has come to mean more. I would also point out here the additional motivation provided by language. Bulgarian is a small language, has always been a small language, and this fact naturally tends towards a closed status of cultural existence. Quite on the contrary, though, it works only stimulatingly towards a cultural and, of course, literary openness, since a mechanism of compensation, of "keeping in pace with" is and has always been activated. This is to say that the notion of "world's literature", to use Goethe's term, is inherent in Bulgarian literature and this is the way it considers itself and is to be viewed upon. A few years ago US writer Gloria Anzaldua introduced the metaphor of the Borderland, defining it as "a vague and undetermined place created by the emotional residue of an unnatural boundary and being in a constant state of transition". We, Bulgarians, have faced a lot of unnatural boundaries of different kinds - and, chiefly by literary means, have been lifting them, or opening them. Hence my metaphor.

BULGARIAN LITERATURE
Bulgarian literature does not have a smooth and uninterrupted development. The most significant period in its history lasted four centuries. On the other hand, however, the most prminent representatives of the Bulgarian literature were often preachers, spiritual and revolutionary leaders, advocates of the National Liberation, freedom and democracy. Bulgarian literature is felt to be an integrative part of the building the national consciousness, confidence and dignity. In the Middle Ages Bulgarian literature had already had a history of over a thousand years. The eleventh-century jubilee was recently celebrated of the special alphabet, called Glagolisa, which was used for the translation of the Gospel into Slavic. In 863 the clergyman Constantine the Philosopher, whose secular name was Cyril , was assigned by the Byzantine authorities to spread the sacred Byzantine books to Moravia in the language of its native population. In 869 after Cyril's death, his brother Methodius continued his noble task. The alphabet named after Cyril was a later revision of

Bulgarian literature . For early ecclesiastical writings, see Church Slavonic . Modern Bulgarian literature stems from the work of Father Paisi, who in 1762 began his history of the Slav Bulgarians. The period of struggle for independence (1840-75) saw the real emergence of a national literature in the work of the poets Sava Rakovski (1821-67) and Petko Rachev Slaveykov (1827-95), the story writer Lyuben Karavelov (1837-79), the dramatist Vasil Drumev (1841-1901), and the great national poet Khristo Botev , who died fighting the Turks. Ivan Vazov was the first professional man of letters, writing plays, novels, poetry, and short stories. After Bulgaria's liberation from Turkish rule (1876), its literature became less revolutionary. A group of late 19th cent. regional writers included Todor Vlaykov (1865-1943), Georgi Stamatov (1869-1942), Anton Strashimirov (1872-1937), the satirist Stoyan Mikhaylovski (1856-1927), and Aleko Konstantinov (1863-97). The poet Pencho Slaveykov (1866-1912) introduced other European literatures into Bulgaria; his Song of Blood (1911-13) is an epic of the struggle against the Turks. Other writers of this period were the symbolist poet Peyo Yavorov (1878-1914), the poet and dramatist Petko Todorov (1879-1916), and the story writer Elin Pelin (1878-1949). Bulgaria's losses in the Balkan Wars and World War I gave rise to a poetry whose chief quality was mysticism, evident in the work of Nikolay Liliyev, Dora Gabe, Elisaveta Bagryans, and Dimcho Debelyanov. The prose writers of the early 20th cent. include the novelists of peasant life Iordan Iovkov (1884-1938) and Dobri Nemirov (1882-1945), and the psychological novelist Georgi Raichev. After 1945, the most admired writers included the poets Khristo Smyrnenski (1898-1923), Khristo Radevski, and Nikola Vaptsarov (1909-42), and the prose writers Lyudmil Stoyanov, Georgi Karaslavov, and Dimiter Dimov, author of the popular novel
