Born in County Durham, England, he moved to Canada with his family at age five, settling on a farm near Lindsay, Ontario, and then moving to Toronto, where he was educated at Toronto Collegiate and the Ontario College of Art. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in London as a scholarship student, all the while pursuing his interest in natural history. Upon his return from England in 1882, in ill health, he joined his brother on a homestead in Manitoba just east of Carberry. He always regarded the next five years as his "golden days," as he walked around the Carberry countryside taking notes and making sketches. At Carberry he also began to write. In 1891 he published The Birds of Manitoba , which in 1892 led to his appointment as Provincial Naturalist by the Manitoba government. In the early 1890s he made several trips to Paris to study art, discovering upon his return to Manitoba that settlement had disrupted much of the natural habitat. Wild Animals I Have Known (1898) was the publication that made Seton famous. It was the first successful attempt to present animals realistically in story form. In 1902 he organized the Woodcraft Indians, a boys' organization, and wrote a manual

Ernest Thompsom Seton Literary Audubon (1860-1946) Ernest Thompson Seton is best known for his extraordinary animal stories, popularized originally in magazines before being reintroduced in book form as Wild Animals I Have Known (1898). In fact, the fame of these stories was so widespread they even inspired Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books (1894-1895). Seton’s particular brand of eccentricity, inner drive, and self-conviction, however, led him to pursue many other occupations during his lifetime: naturalist, writer, artist, educator, and explorer. As well, he was, in 1910, co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America. Seton was a descendant of the Scottish Setons who fought for the Stuarts in 1745 and then fled to England under the name of Thompson. Ernest Thompson Seton (he assumed his family’s historical identity in his twenties) was born in southern England in August 1860, the ninth son in a family of ten boys. When he was six years old, Seton’s family emigrated to Canada, and for several years they resided on a farm near Lindsay, Ontario, where Seton began his lifelong study of birds – often catching and dissecting wildlife to assure that his drawings were realistic. Falling onto hard times, the family moved to Toronto in 1870, but Seton found rural sustenance in the wilds of the Don Valley, the Toronto Marsh, and Queen’s Park, all of which, at that time, teemed with wildlife. His forays into the wilderness did not, however, interfere with his studies: his brilliance as a pupil was soon recognized, and he continued his schooling at Jarvis Street Collegiate. Later, he was apprenticed to a Toronto portrait artist and then studied at the Ontario College of Art where he took the Gold Medal in 1879.

BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY Ernest Thompson Seton was born August 14, 1860 and changed his name from Ernest Evan Thompson in 1898. He was born in England and came to the United States in 1898. He died October 23, 1946 in Santa Fe, New Mexico is buried at Seton Village, Santa Fe. He is best known as the founder of the Boy Scouts of America. He studied art in Toronto, New York, London and Paris. He worked as an illustrator for several publishers and as a naturalist for the Government of Manitoba. He published his first children's book "Wild Animals I have Known" in 1898. He published a large number of children's and nature books as well as numerous articles. His original name was Ernest Seton Thompson. His sketches as a youth won awards. Consequently, he was sent to study art in London at The Royal Academy School of Painting and Sculpture. Late he went to Paris for further study. In 1881, he became the Naturalist for the government of Manitoba. The Ladies Home Journal magazine asked him to write a series on woodcraft for boys. The first article appeared in May, 1902. On the first day of July in 1902, he founded the Woodcraft Indians. He wrote a book, The Birchbark Rolls of the Woodcraft Indians as a guide for the program. This book was sent to Baden-Powell in July of 1906 as a precursor to Seton's visit to England for a series of fall lectures. On October 30th, the two men met at the Savoy Hotel.. He was Chief Scout from 1910 to 1915. The original 1910 handook included 50 pages from Baden-Powell and 100 pages of Seton's writings. Seton developed a plan for incorporating younger boys into Scouting in 1911. Called "The Cubs of America", it used the bear cub as its symbol. Disagreements among Scouting's founders over the value of the new program caused it to be set aside.

Ernest Thompson Seton - (1860-1946) Northwestern Region By Levi McArthur I. Biography and Literary Works Ernest Seton, also known as "Black Wolf," was born August 15, 1860, in South Shields, Durham, England. He was born of Scottish ancestry and his father was a wealthy ship owner. When his father lost his fortune as a ship owner, the family immigrated to Ontario, Canada. His father was not a very good farmer so the family again moved to Toronto were Seton went to school. Seton was active in the arts from his early teens. He won the Gold Medal for art before he was 18. At 19, he went back to England to apply for a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Art. He received a seven-year scholarship that he did not complete. After being very ill from poor living conditions, he moved back to Canada to live with his brothers in Manitoba, near the small town of Carberry. Seton made a worse farmer than his father because he was mostly interested in his nature surroundings. He would go into the Carberry Sandhills for days and weeks on end. He was thought to be lazy by the people of the town. There, he wrote his first natural history articles. His first visit to the United States was in December of 1883. He went to New York where he met with many naturalists, ornithologists, and writers. Throughout the late 1880's, he spent most of his time between Carberry, Toronto, and New York. He became an established wildlife artist and was given a contract in 1885 by the Century Company to make 1000 mammal drawings for the

Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) grew up in Toronto (although he was born in South Shields, County Durham, England). He was the son of a ship builder who, having lost a significant amount of money left for Canada to try farming. Unsuccessful at that too, his father gained employment as an accountant. Macleod (1983: 6) records that much of Ernest Thompson Seton 's imaginative life between the ages of ten and fifteen was centred in the wooded ravines at the edge of town, 'where he built a little cabin and spent long hours in nature study and Indian fantasy'. His father was overbearing and emotionally distant - and he tried to guide Seton away from his love of nature into more conventional career paths. Seton went through puberty late, and 'suffered the social handicaps that slow development entails. [He] fled outdoors for solace' ( ibid He displayed a considerable talent for painting and illustration and gained a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Art in London. However, he was unable to complete the scholarship (in part through bad health). His daughter records that his first visit to the United States was in December 1883. Ernest Thompson Seton went to New York where met with many naturalists, ornithologists and writers. From then until the late 1880's he split his time between Carberry, Toronto and New York - becoming an established wildlife artist (Seton-Barber undated). In 1902 he wrote the first of a series of articles that began the Woodcraft movement (published in the Ladies Home Journal). He had invited a group of boys to camp at his estate in Connecticut in the same year and had experimented with woodcraft and Indian-style camping. However, he began developing his ideas around woodcraft from the 1880os on.
