In this essay Miller surveys conditions in post-war Europe and throughout the world, in particular telling of his visit to Paris in 1953, and what he learnt from conversations with other writers. On the title page, Miller indicates that this essay has already been published in The Chicago Review (1955) and in Syntheses in Brussels in 1954, and will shortly be published in The London Review.
