    16. Lust In The Dust
epic story of suspense and terror, later related by Colonel JH Patterson in the JohnHenry Patterson (18671947), an eccentric and reckless colonel was born in
    http://www.multiline.com.au/~markw/adultry.html
LUST IN THE DUST by Mark Warwick Whilst emigrants to other parts of the British Empire, such as Australia, were usually of middle or working class extraction, the early Kenya settlers were more often aristocrats and high-ranking army officers. The upper class Englishmen who bought land in Kenya cheaply and in vast estates were notable mainly for the urgency and the style with which they established hunts and the ebullience of their extra-marital sexual relations. Between the two World Wars, Kenya gained an unsavoury reputation for spear-heading the 'permissive society'. The not so private affairs of the European settlers (many of them titled) and their wives (most of them well-born) are said to have inspired the cocktail question, "Are you married or do you live in Kenya?". The thriving fledgling colony certainly gave the immigrants a freedom of movement that allowed them to indulge in their favourite vices from orgies of wife swapping to heavy drinking. They built great manors and wooden chateaux set within gardens bowered by flame trees and looking across lawns kept smooth and watered by voiceless black servants. Many settlers were the younger sons of wealthy English families, victims of primogeniture. So many titled people came, pensioned off by their lordly families to enjoy their frolics in the sun without shaming the ancestral home. They had regular incomes and with no need to work they established a lavish and frivolous lifestyle, where champagne, cocaine and morphine flowed and casual love affairs were almost compulsory. Many of the residents of this enchanted feudal paradise succumbed to the 'three As': altitude, alcohol and adultery. Parties ended with keys thrown on the table and spouses departed with somebody else's husband or wife. However this sort of behaviour was by no means new.
