One of the historic landmarks in Martinez is the ranch home of John Muir. Muir (1838-1914) was an explorer, naturalist, author, and foremost advocate of forest protection and of National Parks. John Muir, the legendary wilderness explorer and writer who served as the first President of the Sierra Club, has achieved something of mythic proportions, over 150 years after his birth. His life, work, and vision have inspired countless Americans to appreciate and protect the natural world. Born in Scotland, April 21, 1838, John Muir immigrated to the United States with his family when he was eleven years old. He traveled to California in the spring of 1868 and explored the high country of the Sierra Nevada, making California his life-long home. He also traveled widely in Alaska and throughout the American West, writing numerous books and articles describing natural wonders and arguing for the need to preserve wilderness. When Muir traveled around the world in his later years, he inspired people all over the globe to protect places of special beauty and wildness. His life is celebrated by the existence of Yosemite National Park, which he was instrumental in establishing in 1890. In 1976, the California Historical Society voted Muir the greatest Californian in the state's history. Geographic place names for Muir exist in Alaska, California, Florida, Washington State, Wisconsin, and in his birthplace, Dunbar, Scotland. Now, thanks to legislative action in California, the recognition of John Muir is not confined to geography, but is added to the calendar.

Muir was one of the four founders of the Sierra Club, and its first president, 1892-1914. He was the foremost conservationist of his time, a mountain explorer and exponent of the outdoor life. 'John Muir was not a "dreamer," but a practical man, a faithful citizen, a scientific observer, a writer of enduring power, with vision, poetry, courage in a contest, a heart of gold, and a spirit pure and fine.' Famed naturalist John Muir (1838-1914) came to Wisconsin as a boy and studied at the University of Wisconsin. He first came to California in 1868 and devoted six years to the study of the Yosemite Valley. After work in Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, he returned to California in 1880 and made the state his home. One of the heroes of America's conservation movement, Muir deserves much of the credit for making the Yosemite Valley a protected national park and for alerting Americans to the need to protect this and other natural wonders. My first summer in the Sierra (1911) is based on Muir's original journals and sketches of his 1869 stay in the Sierras. Hired to supervise a San Joaquin sheep owner's flock at the headwaters of the Merced and Tulomne Rivers, Muir sets out for the mountains in June, returning to the Valley in September. He describes the flora and fauna of the mountains as well as his visits to Yosemite and his climbs of Mt. Hoffman and other peaks in the range. Extended Description:
Additionally, John Muir spent time in Indianapolis as a young man working in a carriage maker shop. While there an eye injury led to his fateful decision to leave industry and become a "tramp." His first overland exploration was not in the West, or in Alaska, but rather was a trek from Indiana across the Ohio River and south to Georgia and Florida. When Muir finally reached the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, he was debilitated with malaria, and he recovered only with the help of newfound friends. To aid in his recovery, he decided to travel to California. His travels from Indiana across the southeast to Florida is documented in the posthumously published "A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf."

HOME PAGE YOU ARE HERE MUIR'S TRAVELS -MUIR'S LEGACY- Haines, Alaska's John Muir Association JOHN MUIR (1838 - 1914) JOHN MUIR was a naturalist. He loved to "go to wild places" and experience the wonders of nature. Alaska, like Yosemite in California, was one of Muir's favorite places. Alaska is where Muir came to visit unspoiled wilderness after Yosemite became so popular. Inspired by memories of his boyhood home in Dunbar, Scotland, his experiences in his adopted home of North America, and his extensive travels in Africa, Alaska, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, Central and South America, Russia and New Zealand, John Muir ultimately became the archetypal global citizen and a man for all ages. His writings enshrine him with the great 19th Century Transcendentalist philosophers of America, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Walt Whitman. As adventurer, explorer, scientist, author, and finally charasmatic and visionary activist, Muir Fathered the modern National Parks and Conservation Movements the monumental legacy of a uniquely sensitive spirit and towering genius. The generations that follow must attend to his words and deeds which may be the salvation of the planet.
