A petition by some residents of Leeds County
to request a new provincial election, June 1835. Introduction and Transcription April 1997
pcote@cogeco.ca
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND TO THE 1835 PETITION Significance Those interested in the politics of the time will have a list of many of Ogle Gowan's supporters, from Justices of the Peace to Orange Lodges members (they are not identified as such but it is tempting to identify certain groups of names, which appear more than once, in almost identical order, as Orange Lodges or at least groups which were, more that once, all present at the same time. The groupings which can be identified as belonging to FOLL Twp. certainly contain surnames that can easily be associated with Orangeism such as Birmingham and McAlpin in Leeds and Taylor, Steacy and McNickle in Lansdowne) and other members of the community. There is even a few identifiable Catholics in the list such as Dear, Curtin, Flood and Nailon (sic), in addition to the odd pre-Irish name such as Wiltse and Stevens. The Landons are conspicuous by their absence. Limitations One other caveat: simply because his name is on the list does not mean he actually signed the petition. As an example, John Deir's name appears on the petition three times, in association with the same group of names. Firstly, he could not write and no X's appear beside any names to indicate he was "signed for"; secondly, his name appears each time with the some of the most prominent Orange names in that part of the Township: Taylor, Webster and McNickle; thirdly, he was Irish Catholic. No one will ever know if John Deir actually supported Gowan, was coerced (his farm was a tiny bit of green in a sea of orange), or if his name was added each time without his knowledge. His brother James' name appears in the same grouping three times as well.

Introduction to this online version: Typed by hand by Richard and Margie Druery . Richard and Margie sent me the text file; I put that into html and added the pics that they scanned and sent me separately. Originally 79 pages. This text is also available as an e-text (no pics, no formatting, no full title information, like for instance, no date first printed...) here: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext02/tealv10.txt This is a cool little book. It tells you a bit about days long gone by and a lot about the history of tea. And the poem at the end of chapter 12 is sure to make you smile. Enjoy! Cheers

Prefatory
The casual reader in many a nook and corner of this extended land will perhaps ask - "Who are the publishers of this book, and what is their purpose?" We anticipate any such enquiry, and reply that Francis H. Leggett & Co. are Importing and Manufacturing Grocers; that our object in publishing this and other books is to bring ourselves and our goods into closer relations with consumers at a distance from New York; and incidentally, to provide readers with interesting information respecting the food which they eat and drink. In our search for material to aid in the preparation of this book, we were greatly indebted to Mr. F. N. Barrett, editor of T HE A MERICAN G ROCER , who generously gave us access to what is probably the most complete and valuable collection of books upon Foods to be found on this continent. We wish to also to acknowledge the kind response of Messrs. Gow, Wilson and Stanton, of London, to our requests for statistics of the World's Tea Trade, and particularly for information respecting the Teas of Ceylon and India. If our limitations of space had permitted, we should have materially increased the interest of our little book by additional matter derived from the last named firm. Our colored Frontispiece is a faithful representation of a Chinese tea plant, showing the flower and the seeds.
