Portrait of Thomas Hughes from a plaque in Uffington Church Thomas Hughes was horn in Uffington on 20th October, 1822, where his grandfather (Rev. Dr. Hughes) was the Vicar. His grandmother, Mary Ann (nee) Watts, lived in Uffington Rectory before they had married as her father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all held the living of Uffington. Thomas was the second of the eight children born to John and Margaret Hughes. His (non-clerical) father was an essayist and storyteller, and figures as the squire in 'Tom Brown's School Days' . We learn from the book that he dealt out justice and mercy in a rough way and begat sons and daughters, and hunted the fox, and grumbled at the badness of the roads and the times. And his wife dealt out stockings, and calico shirts, and smock frocks, and comforting drinks to the old folks with the "rheumatiz", together with good council to all. The family lived in the Manor House which was on the site of the present primary school.
Childhood
Thomas spent a carefree childhood in Uffington. He was encouraged to mix and play with other village children, he enjoyed rambles on the Downs, bird's nesting and stickleback fishing in

Thomas Hughes, the son of a landowner from Uffington in Berkshire, was born in 1822. After being educated at Oriel College, Oxford, Hughes trained as a lawyer. While a student Hughes read The Kingdom of Christ (1838) by Frederick Denison Maurice. In the book Maurice argued that politics and religion are inseparable and that the church should be involved in addressing social questions.
Hughes became a supporter of Chartism and after the decision by the House of Commons to reject the Chartist Petition in 1848, he joined with Frederick Denison Maurice to form the Christian Socialist movement. The men discussed how the Church could help to prevent revolution by tackling what they considered were the reasonable grievances of the working class.
The Christian Socialists published two journals, Politics of the People (1848-1849) and The Christian Socialist (1850-51). The group also produced a series of pamphlets under the title Tracts on Christian Socialism. Other initiatives included a night school in Little Ormond Yard and helping to form eight Working Men's Associations. In 1854 the evening classes that the Christian Socialists had been involved in developed into the establishment of the Working Men's College.
In 1856 Hughes wrote Tom Brown's Schooldays (1856) based on his school experiences at Rugby School. His follow-up novel, Tom Brown at Oxford was less successful. Hughes became a Liberal MP between 1865 and 1874 and principal of the Working Men's College from 1872 to 1883. Thomas Hughes died in 1896.

    Hughes, popular for his novel Tom Brown's Schooldays was born in Berkshire as the son of a country gentleman. He went to a small private chool but later attended (along with his older brother) Rugby. They say that Hughes was not the best pupil...he was too lazy to work and did not care much about the academic work. But he was sport-oriented and became the captain of school football and cricket team. The headmaster of the school was Thomas Arnold and mostly because of Hughes's idleness he did not becom the member of the headmaster's *top ten* (although this might have been luck for Hughes for Arnold was very demanding, tried to supress the childishness and wanted his favourites to act like adults). After leaving Rugby, Hughes went to Oriel College where he met Frances Ford, his future wife. He also set for a journey to Scotland - the trip made him be politically active. When he left Oxford he spent most of his time reading for the bar at Lincoln's Inn. There he met F. D. Maurice, a chaplain, and soon became one of the chaplain's Christian Socialist (due to his membership he met Charles Kingsley He started teaching in a night school in the London slums and helped to establish the Working Men's College (he even had some classes in boxing there). Moreover he began to work as a barrister and yeah, he finally got married and moved to Wibledon where he shared his house with one of his friends. In Wimbledon he was writing his

    T he founding of the Rugby colony in 1880 was the living fulfillment of Englishman Thomas Hughes' lifelong goals and ideals. Hughes was born in Uffington, Berkshire, in the Vale of the White Horse, on October 22, 1822. He was the second of seven sons of John Hughes and Margaret Wilkinson. Tom's oldest brother, George, about whom he wrote Memoir of a Brother, was a great influence on his life. Especially important is the fact that Tom attended Rugby School , a well-known British public school, whose headmaster, Dr. Thomas Arnold, was father of Matthew Arnold, poet and scholar. Dr. Arnold made extensive progress in British school reform. The strong impressions he made on Hughes' life and ideals was immortalized in his most famous novel, Tom Brown's School Days . Though Hughes often denied it, Tom Brown was clearly semi-autobiographical. (A school established briefly at Rugby, Tennessee, was named Arnold School, and the name of the colony, of course, came from the English institution.) After graduation, Tom Hughes went on to Oriel College, Oxford, where he excelled in sports more than in academics, but received his B. A. in 1845. He read law at Lincoln's Inn and at the Inner Temple, London, both inns of court and roughly the British equivalent of American law schools. He was called to the Bar in 1847, and in the same year married Francis (Fanny) Ford. He was twice elected a member of Parliament and achieved designation as a Queen's Councilor.
