Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was one of the leaders of the American Revolution. Born January 17, 1706, he grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, before moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Franklin was a writer, inventor, printer, and ambassador. He was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin also founded the University of Pennsylvania. He was the author and publisher of Poor Richards Almanac , where he coined such maxims as "A penny saved is a penny earned" (a penny bought significantly more at the time than it does now). He wrote his autobiography between 1771 and 1788, at first addressed to his son, then later completed for the benefit of mankind at the request of a friend. Franklin is famous for his experiments with electricity, including his discovery, by the extremely dangerous experiment of flying a kite during a lightning storm, that lightning was similar in nature (though vastly more powerful) to sparks of static electricity. His inventions include the Franklin stove and bifocals. He was involved in the creation of the first volunteer fire department, free public library, and many other civic enterprises. During and after the revolution, Franklin served as ambassador to France and was hugely popular with his hosts. In fact he was so popular, that it became fashionable for wealthy French families to decorate the parlor with a painting of him.
At his death bequeathed £1000 (about $4400, at the time) each to the cities of Boston and Philadelphia, in trust for 200 years. During the lifetime of the trust, Philadelphia used it for a variety of loan programs to local residents; from 1940 to 1990, the money was used mostly for mortgage loans. When the trust came due, Philadelphia decided to spend it on scholarships for local high school students. Boston used the gift to establish a trade school that, over time, became the Franklin Institute of Boston. His likeness adorns the American $100 bill. As a result, $100 bills are sometimes referred to in slang as "Benjamins" or "Franklins". [Adapted from

He played the viola da gamba . He attended concerts often, including one notable performance where "the sublime old man Handel was led to the organ and conducted the Messiah for the last time eight days before his death [in 1759]." Water Music. In 1761 Franklin was living in London, lobbying Parliament on behalf of the Pennsylvania colonial legislature. His experiments with electricity had already made him famous in the scientific community, and the candlemaker's son had reached the top of the political and social scene as well. Franklin wrote about a concert he attended: "He collected a number of glasses of different sizes, fixed them near each other on a table, and tuned them by putting into them water, more or less as each note required. The tones were brought out by passing his fingers round their brims. He was unfortunately burnt here, with his instrument, in a fire which consumed the house he lived in [1759]. Mr. E. [Edmund Hussey] Delaval, a most ingenious member of our Royal Society, made one in imitation of it, with a better choice and form of glasses, which was the first I saw or heard. Franklin was inspired.

No hay nada en su naturaleza que pueda producir felicidad. Cuanto más tiene un hombre, más quiere. En vez de llenar un vacio, lo crea. Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was born to a poor soap boiler on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of many children in his family, and he learned to appreciate the rewards of hard work at age twelve as an apprentice at his brother James' printing shop. By the age of seventeen, Franklin's skills as a printer had become so strong that at twenty-two he left Boston to open his own printing shop in Pennsylvania. This is where he developed his two most famous publications, The Pennsylvania Gazette , the most popular newspaper in the colonies, and the annual Poor Richard's Almanac . Franklin was one of the first printers to use cartoons in his publications in order to accommodate the people who had not learned to read. He believed that his publications were a way to get information to every person, not just those who could read. In Pennsylvania, Franklin founded organizations, became involved in the community, and assembled a vast collection of inventions that would allow people to live better lives. He started the first circulatory library known as the American Philosophical Society and founded an academy that would soon become the University of Pennsylvania. As a journalist, Franklin was constantly putting on and taking off his reading glasses. He became frustrated with the repetition of this task, so he cut the bottom half of his reading classes and put them in the frames of another pair of spectacles. He had given birth to the bifocals, which many of us still use today.

    Benjamin Franklin
was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. Franklin was one of the leading founding fathers of the United States of America. He signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, and served as the new nation's ablest diplomat. Franklin's formal schooling ended early but his education never did. He believed that "the doors to wisdom are never shut," and read every book he could get his hands on. Franklin taught himself simple algebra and geometry, navigation, logic, history, science, English grammar and a working knowledge of five other languages. Franklin had a simple formula for success. He believed that successful people worked just a little harder than other people. Benjamin Franklin certainly did. He built a successful printing and publishing business in Philadelphia; he conducted scientific studies of electricity and made several important discoveries; he was an accomplished diplomat and statesman; he helped establish Pennsylvania's first university and America's first city hospital. He also organized the country's first subscription library. Franklin was also unequaled in America as an inventor until Thomas Edison . He invented the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod. Franklin wasn't greedy about his inventions, preferring to have them used freely for the comfort and convenience of everyone. Thomas Jefferson called Benjamin Franklin "the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived."
