As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. "The Idea," he wrote, "exists only by virtue of its form" - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?"
"I have experienced it," she replied.
"That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears."
(from Madame Bovary Flaubert started to write during his school years. A disappointment in his teens - Flaubert fell in love with Elisa Schlésinger, who was married and some 10 years his senior - inspired much of his early writing. In the 1840s Flaubert studied law at Paris, a brief episode in his life, and in 1844 he had a nervous attack. "I was cowardly in my youth," Flaubert wrote once to George Sand. "I was afraid of life." He recognized from suffering a nervous disease, although it could have been epilepsy. However, the diagnosis changed Flaubert's life. He failed his law exams and decided to devote himself to literature. In this he was helped by his father who bought him a house at Croisset, on the River Seine between Paris and Rouen.

FLAUBERT, Gustave (1821-1880) Autograph Note, Initialled. One side of an octavo sheet, begun horizontally and then continued vertically in the left margin; place and date illegible. Addressed to an unknown "vieux cheri," though internal considerations strongly suggest his closest friend, Bouilhet, Flaubert writes that he has returned after an absence and is looking forward to seeing this friend, suggests a possible time and notes a few complications houseguests and some responsibilities regarding his nephew. He mentions a speech of which he has received a copy from the correspondent's friend and a book he expects to recieve from someone else. His postscript refers to a study of schools of drawing in which he is immersed. A nice note from one of the chief figures in the literature of the Nineteenth Century, author of Madame Bovary and Bouvard et Pecuchet, among other radically unique excressences.

    Gustave Flaubert
The French novelist Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was born in Rouen, Normandy on 12 December 1821 as the son of a surgeon.
He studied law in Paris, but dedicated most of his time to literature. He did not complete his law training and returned to Rouen to dedicate himself on his literary career.
His fame and influence as a master of fiction are based on his best-known novel "Madame Bovary" (1856). This novel tells the story of an unfulfilled wife of a country doctor who pursues romantic fulfillment in a series of bold affairs. This novel was an immediate success and Flaubert enjoined a period of social success in Paris and at the court of Napoleon III.
Flaubert's intense attention to facts and description caused some to see him as a realist or naturalist, though Flaubert rejected such labels himself. Other important works of Flaubert are "Salammbô" (1862) and "L'Education sentimentale" (1869). He is one of the most respected French authors of the nineteenth century. Flaubert died on 8 May 1880 and was buried at Rouen.
