If you take a leaf out of 'Through the Looking Glass' and believe, as the White Queen did, in as many as six impossible things before breakfast, then you really will find Alice watching the White Rabbit disappearing down a hole in the riverbank- in Guildford. And you really will find Alice stepping through the looking glass close to the castle grounds. And there really was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University, called Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, who was at his happiest in the company of children. Charles Dodgson was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, one of eleven children living at the rectory; their father being the rector there. They eventually moved to Croft, in Yorkshire. Charles was the eldest son and kept his brother and sisters entertained by inventing games and stories, making them toys and doing conjuring tricks. He also began to draw and write poems skills he developed and used in later years. At Oxford University Charles Dodgson gained a first class degree in mathematics, was ordained a deacon (which involve preaching; something he found difficult to do because of a speech impediment), became skilled at photography and continued his storytelling. There were several young children resident at the University - sons and daughters of professors and heads of houses. The Rev. Liddell, Dean of Christ Church, had four young children - one of them was Alice. Alice was just four years old when her family moved to the University, but like her brother and two sisters she loved to listen to the stories that Mr. Dodgson invented for them, as well as going for walks and picnics and having her photograph taken. They would tell him what they had been doing and he would turn it into an adventure story, making the child the hero. He would also incorporate people they knew, such as Alice's governess, Miss Prickett, who became the 'thorny' Red Queen.

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) BIOGRAPHY Born in Daresbury, England Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, also known as Lewis Carroll, was the third of eleven children (Hudson 34). Growing up with eight younger brothers and sisters he became the one who entertained them with games and magic tricks (Blake 45). Inventing games for his siblings might have been what led Dodgson to study and eventually lecture on mathematics and logic at Christ Church, Oxford in 1850. In 1961 he became a deacon of the Church of England (Blake 46). In 1856 he invented the pen name Lewis Carroll by a very logical process, which fit the mathematician’s organized personality (Blake 46). He transposed his first and second names, translated them into Latin, Lodovicus Carolus, and then turned them into the English names (Blake 46). This became an alter ego of sorts. He kept his serious life as a professor and don very separate from his life as the beloved children’s author. Photography became another hobby of Carroll’s (Blake 46). Being that he took pictures mainly of children, he kept this, like his writing, separate from Charles Dodgson. This is how his first and most popular story of Alice In Wonderland came about. Carroll had befriended the three sisters, Alice, Lorina, and Edith Liddell who were the daughters of Dean Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church. He got to know them by taking photographs of the girls (Lennon 108). One afternoon the four of them and another don went on a boat ride up the Thames River. This is where Carroll spun his nonsense tale about a little girl named Alice and her adventures underground (Lennon 109). The book was published in 1866, after some disagreements between the author and the illustrator, Sir John Tenniell (Blake 50).

During this time Dodgson wrote a series of magazines to entertain his family. 1846 to 1849 - Starting January 27th 1846 attends Rugby School. - 23rd May 1850, matriculates at Christ Church, Oxford. - 24th January takes up residence at Christ Church. Mother dies on January 26th. - Bachelor of Arts, 1st Class Honours in Mathematics, 2nd Class Honours in Classics. - Becomes Sub-Librarian to Christ Church and Mathematics lecturer (a position held until 1881). - First meets the Liddell family in February. Some reports suggest that he was so shy he could sit at a party for hours without adding a word to the conversation. Others say that he was a sociable, charming man who had many friends. One undisputed fact about him, however, is that his two Alice books are among the most entertaining children's stories ever written. Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. He was the third of the 11 children of the Reverend Charles Dodgson and his wife, Frances Jane Lutwidge. In Dodgson's early years, he was educated at home. His "reading lists" show that he was very intelligent. He entertained his brothers and sisters by creating his own magazines full of poetry, stories, and drawings. After the age of 12, Dodgson was educated at private schools. He went on to Christ Church, a college at Oxford University, in 1851. He was a brilliant student, especially in mathematics. After graduating in 1854, he became a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church. Despite reports that his lectures were extremely boring, he held this position for the next 26 years. Dodgson was a shy man who sometimes stuttered when he was nervous. However, among children, he was thoroughly at home. Some stories about him say that he lost his stutter when he was with children. One of his young friends, the dainty Alice Liddell, was his favorite child. She was one of the three daughters of the dean of Christ Church.

Sam Loyd Biography Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury, Cheshire, England, in 1832, he was educated at Rugby and Oxford, took orders in 1861, and was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1855-81when he resigned to devote his life to writing under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll. As a boy he was fascinated by the craft of conjuring and this, together with ideas for games, puzzles, anagrams, riddles, chess problems, mathematical recreation and logic, occupied his mind for all of his life. He was responsible for many original puzzles and new innovations, including ‘Doublets’ invented in 1879 and ‘The Game of Logic’ in 1886. One can appreciate the extent of his obsession with puzzles when considering that almost all seventy-two of his ‘Pillow-Problems’, many of which had complicated mathematical solutions, were compiled by him while lying awake at night. He would commit nothing to paper until the morning, when he would first of all write down the answer, followed by the question and then the detailed solution. The children’s classic: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865) was written for the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the head of his Oxford college. along with its sequel ‘Through the Looking Glass’ (1872) it combines elements of fantasy, logic and nonsense. He also wrote nonsense verse, notably ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876).
