About the Book The Author Excerpts Index ... To Order Published by Aardvark Editorial Services Index Citizen Daniel (1775–1835) and the Call of America contains such a wealth of references to people and places that we felt posting the index online would be very helpful, not only as a resource for those conducting genealogical research but also as a guide to the scope of the book itself. Included in the index are the businesses (stores, inns, and taverns), contemporary authors and publications, people, places, tribes, and ships mentioned in the text. Proper names are given as they appear in letters and journals, and are cross-referenced to present-day spellings. Additional information, such as dates, professions, and locations, is provided where it can be discerned. If you are searching for a specific person, please keep in mind that spelling was not standardized in the early 1800s. There are inconsistencies in spelling from one letter to the next, and it was not always apparent which spelling was "correct." If you happen to notice errors, or have pertinent information regarding people about whom we have been unable to offer much data, we would be grateful if you shared it with us. We hope to add information we gather here to future editions of this wonderful book. To share your comments, please

1831 Jan 1, William Lloyd Garrison, 24-year-old reformer of Massachusetts, began publishing his newspaper The Liberator, dedicated to the abolition of slavery. Garrison's stridency and uncompromising position on both the institution of slavery and slave owners offended many in the North and South, but he vowed to continue the fight until slavery was abolished. In the first issue of his newspaper, he wrote, "I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! No!" Garrison once burned a copy of the U.S. Constitution, condemning it as "a covenant with death and an agreement with hell" because it did not forbid slavery. The Liberator ceased publication in 1865 after the 13th Amendment was passed, outlawing slavery. [see 1830]
