John Buchan - author of 'The Thirty-nine Steps' - to be honoured by Institute of Physics
On 16 June 1999, John Buchan, statesman and author of 'The Thirty-nine Steps' will be honoured when his son, Lord Tweedsmuir, unveils a plaque commemorating his father at the Institute of Physics' headquarters. The Institute's London headquarters at 76 Portland Place is on the site of the third house owned by John Buchan in London. This area features significantly in the Thirty-nine Steps - as it is in a flat in Portland Place that Scudder, the American spy, is murdered - which triggers Richard Hannay's flight around Scotland pursued by the deadly Black Stone gang who will plunge Europe into war on 15 June 1914 - unless Hannay can stay alive to stop them. Eighty-five years almost to the day after this momentous date, the Institute will pay tribute to John Buchan, who as well as writing around 100 books, including thirty novels, was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and Governor General of Canada. Buchan and his wife, Susan, lived in a house at 76 Portland Place from 1913 to 1919. The house was damaged by a bomb in the Second World War and then completely destroyed by a fire after the war. Dr Alun Jones, Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics said
