Purchase Plays by Dion Boucicault BOUCICAULT, DION (1820-1890), Irish actor and playwright, was born in Dublin on the 26th of December 1820, the son of a French refugee and an Irish mother. Before he was twenty he was fortunate enough to make an immediate success as a dramatist with London Assurance , produced at Covent Garden on the 4th of March, 1841, with a cast that included Charles Matthews, William Farren, Mrs. Nesbitt and Madame Vestris. He rapidly followed this with a number of other plays, among the most successful of the early ones being Old Heads and Young Hearts, Louis XI, and The Corsican Brothers . In June 1852 he made his first appearance as an actor in a melodrama of his own entitled The Vampire at the Princess' theatre. From 1853 to 1869 he was in the United States, where he was always a popular favourite. On his return to England, he produced at the Adelphi a dramatic adaptation of Gerald Griffin's novel

Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wilde (1854-1900) Philip V. Allingham , Faculty of Education, Lakehead University (Canada) scar Wilde, the son of an eminent Dublin surgeon Walter Pater he founded the Aesthetic Movement, which advocated "art for art's sake." His aesthetic idiosyncrasies such as his wearing his hair long, dressing colourfully, and carrying flowers while lecturing Gilbert and Sullivan parodied in the operetta Patience After his marriage to Constance Lloyd in 1884, he published several children's books, and in 1891 the tale of a hedonistic Adonis with the tormented soul of a satyr, The Picture of Dorian Gray . In a brilliant series of domestic comedies Lady Windermere's Fan A Woman of No Importance (1893), and An Ideal Husband (1894) Wilde took the London stage by storm with his witty, epigrammatic style, insolent ease of utterance, and suave urbanity. Wilde described Lady Windermere's Fan as "one of those modern drawing-room plays with pink lampshades." Its combination of polished social drama and corruscatingly witty dialogue was repeated in 1895 in the two hits that he had on the London stage simultaneously, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest . Later that same year Wilde's tragic downfall was precipitated by the accusation of homosexuality by the Marquis of Queensbury, father of Wilde's intimate, Lord Alfred Douglas. The irate peer left a card at Wilde's club addressed: "To Oscar Wilde posing as a Somdomite" (sic). Wilde, taking it that the writer meant "Sodomite," sued for libel. However, after a sensational trial, Wilde was sentenced to two years' hard labour for homosexual practices. Sent to Wandsworth Prison in November, 1895, Wilde was subsequently transferred to Reading Gaol. Bankrupt and ruined in health, Wilde left prison in 1897 and settled, bitter and broken, in Paris under the pseudonym "Sebastian Melmoth" (the name of his favourite martyr from

The Shaughraun Written by Dion Boucicault At the Huntington Theatre in Boston Old Becomes New Again at The Shaughraun HISTORY From 1875 to 1919 this melodramatic play was performed annually in Boston with the playwright, Dion Boucicault, starring in the role of Conn O'Kelly, the Shaughraun himself. Since that time The Shaughraun hasn't been performed nor hardly heard of, at least not in America. This year, nearly 80 years later, the Huntington Theatre in Boston brought it back to life, making the old new again. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dion Boucicault ("boo-SEE-ko"), author of The Shaughraun Although Dion Boucicault wrote many plays, the most famous were The Colleen Bawn and The Shaughraun . "During his lifetime, productions of The Shaughraun In 1883 his wife Agnes filed for divorce, claiming infidelity as he fathered a son by actress Kathryn Rogers. The negative publicity was good for this tour of The Shaughraun as people came to watch the evil man. Two years later, at age 64, he married Louise Thorndike, an American actress only 21 years old. It wasn't for three more years after this marriage that Agnes was granted a divorce. At this time the public scandal caught up with him and he began to lose popularity. His acting company was disbanded, his producing career ended, and he died two year later. What a fascinating life this man had. What a great motion picture it would make... Perhaps someday I'll write it. PLOT A rather complicated interwoven plot is one reason this play can survive today. In this story we have character actors, straight men and sappy but smart women, and of course several bad guys all with their own agenda. There's political intrigue, a jailbreak, death (kind of), mystery, romance, and slapstick. Since this play hasn't been performed in many many years I'm providing a plot summary - so here in a nutshell (that means paragraph in this case) is the plot:
