They soon after had a falling out, facing off with guns and daggers in a barroom brawl in which Jackson was seriously wounded. Benton moved to St. Louis in 1815, became a newspaper editor, and upon Missouri's statehood in 1820 he was elected as one of its first U.S. Senators, serving for 30 years. He came to be recognized as a great orator and Senate leader . Benton's anti-slavery views cost him his Senate seat in 1850. Walter Q. Gresham (1832-1895) He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1854 and elected to the State Legislature in 1860. As the Civil War broke out, Gresham recruited his own military company, and rose in rank to Brigadier General. A gunshot wound in battle in Georgia ended his military career. He returned to practice law in Indiana, and ran unsuccessfully for both the U.S. House and Senate. He was appointed Postmaster General in 1883 by President Arthur. A New generation of leaders Emerge from the War of 1812 America’s second war with Britain (1812-1815) saw the rise of a new and influential citizenry in an ever-expanding society. Prominent among them were war veterans. ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) Waxhaw Settlement, S.C. Seventh President of the U.S. Andrew Jackson served two terms as President (1828-1837). He championed equality of opportunity for Americans from all walks of life, majority rule, limited government and fiscal responsibility. He was the first and last President to pay off the national debt. As a general in the Tennessee militia and later the regular U.S. Army, he led troops to victory over the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend, Ala., and the British at New Orleans. Three years after the war, he defeated the Spanish in Florida. The quintessential self-made man, Jackson launched his career in the legal profession. He was Tennessee’s first senator and representative in Congress and was Florida’s territorial governor. For the remainder of his life, Jackson was the most popular man in the nation. A Directory of Towns, Villages, and Hamlets Past and Present of Camden County, Missouri Compiled by Arthur Paul Moser Camden County [I] This county was settled by hardy frontiersmen in 1834 or 1835. The relations of the settlers with the Indians, who were then in possession of the county were very friendly. Kinderhook County was organized January 23, 1841, and Oregon was made the county seat. February 23, 1843, the name was changed to Camden, and the county seat to Erie. Linn Creek afterwards became the county seat. (Gazetteer of Missouri, Campbell , 1874, p. 99.) The County Seat The commissioners appointed in the act creating Kinderhook County, to select a site for the permanent seat of justice, met at the time specifiedthe second Monday of April, 1841and selected a site, and procured the title from the owners thereof by deeds dated on the 15th of that month. The land described in this deed was the southeast part of northwest fractional quarter of the same Section (25, Township 39 North, Range 17 West), it being all that portion of the quarter section lying south of the Osage River, containing seven acres, more or less.
