English journalist, humorist, and detective story
writer. Bentley, the creator of Philip Trent, was once
called (by John Carter) the father of the contempo-
rary detective story. He was born in Shepherd's
Bush, a suburb of London. His father was an official
in the Lord Chancellor's Department, and Bentley
was educated in London at St. Paul's School, where
he met G. K. Chesterton, who became his closest
friend and an important influence on his career.
At nineteen Bentley won a history scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, and quickly became involved in many activities. He was president of the Oxford Union (the famed debating society) and cap- tain of the university's boat club. He also founded a school magazine his first literary experience. Bentley left Oxford to study law in London and was admitted to the bar in 1902. That year he mar- ried Violet Boileau; they had two sons; one became an engineer, the other, Nicolas, a well-known artist and illustrator who also wrote several thrillers. Also in 1902 Bentley became involved in jour- nalism, which was to be his lifelong career. He

A clerihew is a humorous pseudo-biographical quatrain, rhymed as two couplets. This light verse form was created in 1890 by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875- 1956). Bentley, who is mainly remembered for his classic detective story Trent's Last Case, first started writing clerihews with his friend, G.K. Chesterton, as a diversion from school work. The first collection of clerihews was published in 1905, and soon the verse form was named after the author's name. HOW TO WRITE CLERIHEWS? Keep in mind the clerihew form and pattern

E.C. Bentley Edmund Clerihew Bentley was born in Shepherd's Bush, London. In 1887 he entered St. Paul's School where he struck up the most important and enduring aquaintanceship of his life, with G.K. Chesterton . They were members of the school's Junior Debating Club, and contributed essays and poems to the Debater , the club's journal. Bentley invented a new sort of limerick, the 'clerihew'.
After St. Paul's, Bentley went to Merton College, Oxford where he studied classics. After Oxford, he studied law but quickly abandoned it in favour of journalism. From 1911 until 1934 he worked for the Daily Telegraph . In 1902, he married Violet Boileau with whom he had two sons. His first crime novel was published in 1913 which was an immediate success. The public however had to wait for more than twenty years for his second crime novel. Titles and year of publication:
1) Trent's Last Case 2) Trent's Own Case (with H. Warner Allen) 3) Trent Intervenes (short stories) 4) Elephant's Work: An Enigma Back

Clerihews
Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) is remembered mainly for his classic detective story Trent's Last Case and for the verse form that was named after him - the clerihew. It was at the age of sixteen, while he was at St. Paul's School in London, that Bentley first started writing clerihews, as a diversion from school work. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's life-long friend, was at St. Paul's at the same time, and he too wrote clerihews. Here is one of Bentley's original clerihews from this period: Sir Humphrey Davy
Abominated gravy.
He lived in the odium
Of having discovered sodium. Bentley's first collection of verse in this vein was published in 1905 as Biography For Beginners . Further collections appeared in 1929 and in 1939. It was soon after publication of the first volume that the name CLERIHEW became applied to this particular form of light verse. What exactly is a clerihew? Frances Stillman in The Poet's Manual and Rhyming Dictionary defines it as 'a humorous pseudo-biographical quatrain, rhymed as two couplets, with line of uneven length more or less in the rhythm of prose'. Add to this, that the name of the subject usually ends the first or, less often, the second line, and that the humour of the clerihew is whimsical rather than satiric, and there you have a complete definition. Here is a brief selection of my favourite Bentley clerihews: The people of Spain think Cervantes
Equal to half-a-dozen Dantes;
