books Collections Subject Guides Exhibitions ... George J. Mitchell Papers Maine Humorists Represented in these collections are primarily nineteenth-century humorists who lived and wrote in Maine or were born in Maine. Holdings: John Kendrick Bangs Collection: Bangs (1862-1922), an Ogunquit, Maine, resident for many years, was a popular author of satire and humorous fiction, including several plays, during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection contains nearly fifty works, mostly first editions, several bearing inscriptions by the author. Charles Farrar Browne (Artemus Ward): Born in Waterford, Maine, in 1834, Browne wrote and lectured as Artemus Ward, a traveling showman. He died in England in 1867, after a lecture tour there. Six volumes of his are in the collections. John Gould Collection: Gould, a member of Bowdoin's class of 1931, was born in Boston in 1908 and has resided in Maine for many years. A journalist and humorist, he has given the College nearly 150 volumes, including all editions of his works; those edited or with a preface or introduction by him; anthologies containing pieces by him; and books about him. A small collection comprising his letters, several literary manuscripts, scrapbooks, and audio recordings is also available.

Physical Description 2 boxes (l linear ft.) 8 photographs (20 cm. x 25 cm. and smaller) Historical/Biographical Note Beverly Chew (B. A., Hobart College, 1869), a founding member of the Grolier Club in 1884, served as its librarian from 1887 to 1892 and as president from 1892 to 1896. From 1887 on, Chew was associated with the Metropolitan Trust Company of New York , retiring as vice-president in 1920. After his death, his extensive library was dispersed at auction in a major sale at the Anderson Galleries in New York City
Scope and Contents
Twenty-five holograph manuscripts of poems by Beverly Chew. Material concerning the printing of Chew’s includes three ALSs from Daniel Berkeley Updike to Grolier Club librarian Ruth Shepard Grannis. One copy of The Wish by Walter Pope, with a preface by Chew and letters to him from Frank E. Hopkins, proprietor of the Marion Press. Photograph of memorial resolution by Walter S. Gilliss and a New York Times obituary notice of 22 May 1924 that includes description of Chew’s library. Six photographs of Chew’s retirement home in

George Derby was written by American humorist and "Puck" editor John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) for the 1903 edition of Phoenixiana, or Sketches and Burlesques, By John Phoenix. It was published by Appleton and Company, New York. George Horatio Derby (1823-1861) of Massachusetts graduated from West Point in 1846 and served in the Army Topographical Engineers at Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo before being sent to California in 1856. San Diego Herald and republished around the nation. Phoenixiana Had Lieutenant George H. Derby been a professional fun- maker, the production of such a work as Phoenixiana burdens which in the end cost him his life. His last commission was a surveyor and lighthouse engineer on the Florida coast, in the discharge of the duties of which he suffered a sunstroke, which affected his eye- sight and caused softening of the brain, from which he died in 1861.
