Silver and turquoise are the twin elements of beauty and meaning which enthrall students of Southwestern Indian culture. This book is the fruit of the author's interest in the history, anthropology, and aesthetics of this craft, with an introduction by Clyde Kluckhohn, and many photographic illustrations of jewelry and its makers. Ernest Haycox, master writer of Western stories, said of this book that it "has the pungency of an old campfire wet down by rain. Unquestionably it will go on the shelves of those who are professional students of the English language, and no doubt it will enrich the working vocabulary of many a writer of Western fiction." True. Other People on Organized Religion
Contents Updated: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 It is surprising to us, brought up indoctrinated with Christianity, how many people, despite the social pressures they faced, showed their independence of spirit and their contempt for the superstitious religions of the Patriarchs. The source of these quotations is Joseph McCabe's Biographical Dictionary, available in full on the web at the Infidels site. Beethoven, during his most productive years had little religious feeling. He once rebuked a friend who had written, "With God's help," by saying, "Man help thyself". When he was dying he yielded to the pressure of Catholic friends and let a priest administer the sacraments, but as the cleric left the room Beethoven quoted the Latin words of the ancient Roman theater: Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over. Christians pretend he meant the comedy of his life but, addressed to the friends who had persuaded him to accept the rites against his better judgement, the meaning is unmistakable. Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918), an authority on Western America who wrote 39 volumes on its history wrote, "There is but little religion in the Churches, and that little graft is strangling."

Yellow Pages Community Link Find a Site Member Login Help History of Spring Valley and the Adobe The adobe house and surrounding grounds have a long history, mostly due to the presence of a nearby spring. This water source attracted people thousands of years ago to use the area. These people, the Indians presently known as Kumeyaay, left evidence of their encampments in the vicinity. The location name was transcribed by the Spanish as "Meti" or "Neti" and later changed to "San Jorge" in 1775 by the Spanish padres. The spring became known as "El aguaje de San Jorge" (Anglicized into "St. George's spring"). By the late 1830s the Indians had been removed from the area and herds of cattle and sheep grazed in the valley.
In May of 1863, Judge Augustus S. Ensworth, of San Diego, filed claim to 160 acres of land that included the spring. He built a two room adobe on the property, the first house erected by a white man in the eastern part of San Diego County. The wood used for beams and doorways was salvaged from the ship Clarissa Andrews, which had gone aground in San Diego Harbor.
Rufus King Porter
Just before Ensworth's death, the ranch was sold to Rufus King Porter of San Pedro for $400. Capt. Porter, his wife Sophia, and daughter Rufina moved to the property on July 31, 1865. Rufus King Porter was the son of Rufus Porter, the founder of the Scientific American magazine, and he led a very colorful life holding numerous jobs and taking on various enterprises. He became well known for his columns about daily life, that appeared in several newspapers.
