49. Apollonius.Net - The Wayward Sun
In 1886, the famous American historian Hubert Howe Bancroft (18321918) relatedthe Okanagan myth of their lost island paradise of Samah-tumi-whoo-lah
http://www.apollonius.net/waywardsun.html
The Wayward Sun It is sunset at the camp of the tribe known as the Utes. Preparations for the annual Sun-Dance have begun. Men and women draped in rabbit-skin robes are drawn to the fire's glow. Dishes of simmering turtle, lizard, insects, and generous servings of berries and seed are shared around the circle. It is time. An elder rises and passed a lined hand over his buffalo-skin cloak. The children are immediately alert, their eyes wide with anticipation. Listen now, on this feast of the Sun-Dance, to the Utes' myth of the taming of the sun-god: Once upon a time Ta-wats, the hare-god, was sitting with his family by the camp-fire in the solemn woods, anxiously waiting for the return of Ta-va (the wayward sun-god). Wearied with long watching, the hare-god fell asleep, and the sun-god came so near that he scorched the naked shoulder of Ta-wats. Foreseeing the vengeance which would be thus provoked, he fled back to his cave beneath the earth. Ta-wats awoke in great anger, and speedily determined to go and fight the sun-god. After a long journey of many adventures the hare-god came to the brink of the earth, and there watched long and patiently, till at last the sun-god coming out he shot an arrow at his face, but the fierce heat consumed the arrow ere it had finished its intended course; then another was sped, but that also was consumed; and another, and another, till only one remained in his quiver, but this was the magical arrow that had never failed its mark. Ta-wats, holding it in his hand, lifted the barb to his eye and baptized it in a divine tear; then the arrow was sped and struck the sun-god full in the face, and the sun was shivered into a thousand fragments which fell to the earth, causing a general conflagration.

Guide to Life and Literature
of the Southwest
Surge of Life in the West THE WANDERINGS of Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, De Soto, and La Salle had long been chronicled, although the chronicles had not been popularized in English, when in 1804 Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark set out to explore not only the Louisiana Territory, which had just been purchased for the United States by President Thomas Jefferson, but on west to the Pacific. Their Journals , published in 1814, initiated a series of chronicles comparable in scope, vitality, and manhood adventure to the great collection known as Hakluyt's Voyages Between 1904 and 1907 Reuben Gold Thwaites, one of the outstanding editors of the English-speaking world, brought out in thirty-two volumes his epic Early Western Travels . This work includes the Lewis and Clark Journals , every student of the West, whether Northwest or Southwest, goes to the collection sooner or later. It is a commentary on the values of life held by big rich boasters of patriotism in the West that virtually all the chronicles in the collection remain out of print. An important addendum to the Thwaites collection of Early Western Travels is "The Southwest Historical Series," edited by Ralph P. Bieber twelve volumes, published 1931-43, by Clark, Glendale, California.

We find ourselves at once outside the beaten track of conquest for gold and glory; of wholesale robberies and human slaughters for the love of Christ; of encomiendas, repartimientos, serfdoms, or other species of civilized imposition; of missionary invasion resulting in certain death to the aborigines, but in broad acres and well filled storehouses for the men of practical piety; of emigration for rich and cheap lands, or for colonization and empire alone; nor have we here a hurried scramble for wealth, or a corporation for the management of a game preserve. There is the charm of novelty about the present subject, if no other; for in our analyses of human progress we never tire of watching the behavior of various elements under various conditions. There is only one example in the annals of America of the organization of a commonwealth upon principles of pure theocracy. There is here one example only where the founding of a state grew out of the founding of a new religion. Other instances there have been of the occupation of wild tracts on this continent by people flying before persecution, or desirous

Autodidactic Profiles
Self-educated People Who've Made a Difference Millions of people pay a king’s ransom for college tuition to learn what is free for the taking when motivated by a compelling desire to learn. In the movie Good Will Hunting , Will (played by Matt Damon) chides an arrogant Ivy League student for paying a fortune for an education that would be free but for the price of a library card. Although this is absolutely valid, very few people believe it. Instead they are convinced the knowledge they could acquire on their own is secondary to paying a lot of money to an institution which will attest that they have, even if they cheated their way through the process. Specialness and eliteness can be purchased, but real knowledge has to be acquired through genuine effort. Practicality aside, the psychology of Internet II is yet another attempt to fashion walls around information, which loses its value if it can’t be parceled out. We need colleges and universities just as we need teachers and people who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with others. But the idea that the only learning respectable enough for economic compensation comes from institutions, which treat it as a scarce resource, is patently absurd. The people named in the following list demonstrate this beyond doubt.

The [MS number] indicates the Mount Shasta Special Collection accession numbers
used by the College of the Siskiyous Library. [MS1168].          Bancroft, Hubert Howe 1832-1918.  The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft .  San Francisco, Calif.: The History Company, 1886-1890. 39 volumes. Some 1886 sets published by A. L. Bancroft Company. Numerous editions exist of the various volumes and subsets.     H. H. Bancroft states "In 1869, having accumulated some sixteen thousand books, manuscripts, and pamphlets, besides maps and cumbersome files of Pacific Coast journals, I determined to go to work" (Vol. 1, p. viii). Many of his materials, for example a manuscript History of British Columbia by A. C. Anderson, were written specifically for him, often by 'old timers' at his request.  Bancroft's interests focused on the western slope of the North American continent, including Alaska and Mexico. His research findings filled 39 volumes, though note that he was aided by many of assistants.
Note that Bancroft, in addition to "Mount Shasta," uses the plural term "Shasta Mountains" (Vol. 1, p. 327) as a general name, in a manner similar to the use of the name by the Hudson's Bay Company and by members of the Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition of 1841 (see Simpson "Letter to McLoughlin" 1842; Dana manuscript journal 1841; Eld manuscript journal... 1841; Wilkes Narratives... 1844).
