BANCROFT, HUBERT HOWE (1832-1918). Hubert Howe Bancroft, historian, the son of Ashley and Lucy (Howe) Bancroft, was born at Granville, Ohio, on May 5, 1832. In 1852 he went to California, where in 1856 he opened a book and stationery shop in San Francisco. With publishing, subscription, and music departments added, the shop became the largest west of Chicago. In 1859 Bancroft began collecting Californiana. His interest soon spread to include all the Pacific states from Panama to Alaska and eastward through Texas. Eventually he amassed books, pamphlets, newspapers, and manuscripts to the amount of 60,000 volumes. After it was moved to the University of California in 1905, his library became the chief center of research in western history and, incidentally, the training ground for a number of specialists in Texas history. Bancroft determined not only to collect historical materials on the West but to try to chronicle that history comprehensively. With hired assistants, who eventually numbered 600, he began to index his holdings, to take notes, and to write. Between 1874 and 1890 he published thirty-nine massive volumes detailing the history of the western half of the continent. Unfortunately, he published the set as his Works and did not precisely credit the writings of his assistants. These books, however, are said to be the greatest compendium of information on their vast subject and the best reference on many of its parts. Although the set is California-centered, the six volumes on Mexico are immediate background for Texas history, and the two on the north Mexican states and Texas were acclaimed by Eugene C. Barker

Hubert Howe Bancroft, 1832-1918
Hubert Howe Bancroft was born in Granville, Ohio, on May 5, 1832. After working for some time in the Buffalo, New York, book store owned by his brother-in-law, George H. Derby, Bancroft went to California in 1852 to establish a West Coast outlet for the shop. In 1855, after selling the initial stock, he went east and returned with sufficient books and stationery to open a San Francisco store the next year. Within two years the firm began to grow into a publishing house, issuing such items as law books and legal stationery, texts and maps for schools, and music, as well as printing colored labels for cans. Eventually the collection came to include not only books and pamphlets but also manuscripts, maps, newspapers and other periodicals, and transcriptions of manuscripts made by his corps of copyists from originals in private hands, or in governmental and church archives. He and his staff also created original materials by interviewing pioneers whose recollections might not otherwise have been preserved, resulting in hundreds of early oral histories termed "dictations."

Biography
Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was a Pacific Coast historian, book dealer, bibliophile, and entrepreneur. Having no formal schooling, Bancroft educated himself through travel and reading. A native of Granville, Ohio, he began his career as a bookstore clerk in Buffalo, New York. He came to California in 1852, and in 1856 he opened a successful bookstore in San Francisco with his brother Albert. By 1870 Bancroft had purchased a five-story building and had enlarged his business to include the selling of sheet music, pianos, and organs. His business also included facilities for printing, engraving, lithography, and bookbinding. At one time Bancroft's business was the largest and foremost bookselling concern west of Chicago. The entire fifth floor of Bancroft's San Francisco store was occupied by his library, which eventually contained over 60,000 works pertaining to Pacific Coast History. Drawing on these and other resources, Bancroft set out to write a comprehensive history of the Western United States. To assist him with this task he hired researchers and writers, some of whom authored works that appeared under Bancroft's name. When completed, Bancroft's 39-volume history became a standard reference source, and included Native Races of the Pacific States (5 volumes, 1874-1876), and History of the Pacific States of North America (21 volumes, 1882-1890). In 1905 the University of California acquired the author's vast library, which became the nucleus of the present-day Bancroft Library.

Bancroft, Hubert Howe 1832-1918, American publisher and historian, b. Granville, Ohio. Bancroft began his career as a bookseller in San Francisco in 1852. Soon he had his own firm, the largest book and stationery business W of Chicago. He also developed a passion for collecting materials on the western regions of North and South America, from Alaska to Patagonia. After toying with the idea of compiling an encyclopedia, he settled on the publication of a prodigious history (39 vol., 1874-90), reissued (1882-90) as The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft. The Works cover the history and to some extent the anthropology of Central America, Mexico, and the Far West of the United States. The first 5 volumes concern the native races, the next 28 the Pacific states, and the last 6 are essays. Literary Industries, Works ; Bancroft personally wrote very little. Because his assistants were not given credit lines and because of Bancroft's rather unethical business practices, Bancroft and the Works were at first severely attacked. However, his enormous contribution soon received just recognition. When Bancroft presented his library to the Univ. of California (1905) it contained about 60,000 items, including rare manuscripts, maps, books, pamphlets, transcripts of archives made by his staff, and personal narratives of early pioneers as recorded by his reporters. Known as the Bancroft Library, the collection remains an outstanding repository of the history of the West.
