Bagehot, Walter (1826-1877)
Business is really more agreeable than pleasure; it interests the whole mind... more deeply. But it does not look as if it did. It was government by discussion that broke the bond of ages and set free the originality of mankind. One of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea. Main page

It is often said that men are ruled by their imaginations; but it would be truer to say they are governed by the weakness of their imaginations. What impresses men is not mind, but the result of mind. The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do. In my youth I hoped to do great things; now I shall be satisfied to get through without scandal.

English journalist, closely associated with the English institutionalist-historicist tradition, One of the early editors of the famous and influential " Manchester School " newspaper The Economist . Bagehot was not avidly opposed to contemporary Classical economics, but he stressed the need for more institutional content - especially cultural and social factors. He was one of the first economists to discuss the concept of the business cycle. Bagehot also developed a distinct theory of central banking. The English Historical School
It would be hard to imagine that the land which gave the world the inductive and empirical methods of Bacon and Macaulay should suddenly allow abstract theoretical constructions of Classical Political Economists such as Adam Smith , David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill reign unchallenged throughout Britain. Indeed, from the very start, empiricist opposition to Classical theory was mustered throughout Britain - culminating, then, in the "English Historical School", akin but not identical to its German and French counterparts.
