Welcome to "Communicating Cultural Africa" - an opportunity to see Africa through different eyes
Are you enchanted by Africa, yet tired of the old stories of famine and war, poverty and corruption?
Are you irritated by the one-sided pictures and the usual simplifications? Are you prepared to meet 11 professional and dedicated observers of the African reality? Would you like to be part of this opportunity to see Africa through different eyes? Then welcome to "Communicating Cultural Africa" - a one-day conference arranged by Dapamda and South Africa Contact. Culture is more than just art and music. Culture is a network of traditions, myths, ceremonies and rules causing us to act as we do - and culture is always changing and developing, moving with the times. Come and meet 11 African journalists and learn from their individual views on what is the "culture of Africa" today. Participating African journalists Baba Abdulai
, journalist from Ghana. Writes on culture for one of Accra's largest weekly papers, the Weekly Spectator. Apart from his work on this newspaper, Baba Abdulai is also a member of Ghana's National Planning Committee of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC).

A Letter from Zambia
-A Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia November 1997 In the November 1996 LBG RPCV newsletter, a member of Peace Corps staff wrote to express his/her feelings of isolation as a gay Peace Corps person in Africa. I would like to share my experiences in hopes that readers will have another perspective of "gay life in Africa." I am currently serving as a volunteer in Zambia. I cannot deny that life as a gay man in Southern Africa is, at times, utterly unbearable. However, the difficulties lie neither with the PC staff nor with the volunteers. Headquarters and my APCD are aware of my sexual orientation and have been very supportive. In fact, my APCD was the person who gave me a copy of your newsletter! In addition, my APCD has put me in contact with other LGB PCVs as I had asked. Most importantly my APCD has respected my request not to be "out" to other PCVs unless I decide. After 10 months in Zambia, I have met incredibly sensitive and supportive volunteers, both straight and gay, who have become good friends. For example, I cannot tell you the sense of "sisterhood" I have felt when my fellow PCV, Ana (who has since returned to the U.S.), joined me in having a "Girl's Day." As a PCV or RPCV, we know that sometimes we need a break, so we rush to the big city for some R&R. So with my "sister," Ana (who appropriately left her husband at home), we took a break and had a "Girl's Day." Our day began with continental breakfast poolside at the Hotel Continental, and then a cut-n-curl at Salon La Chic followed by an aerobic workout and full body massage at our favorite gym. We then had a little light lunch, gave each other facials (most PCVs assigned to Africa with extra luggage space would have packed extra film or travel guides, but this gay man recognized the importance of proper skin care under a hot Africa sun) and then got ready for a night out on the town.

Sample text from the Online World Monitor newsletter
ISSN: 0805-6315. December . (C) by Odd de Presno, Norway. Links are not maintained! Check the handbook for current links. Earlier this month, I visited Lagos, Nigeria. Getting in and out was a bad experience. The Murtala Muhammad Airport's customs people asked for bribes, and some in an aggressive way. The amount requested seemed to increase by the number of stars on the uniform. I paid some of them off to avoid more hassle.
Then they discovered my laptop computer! Five of them jumped on me. " You must pay US$200.00! You can reclaim the money when you leave. " A lie. We later discovered that they had given me a receipt for VAT on the amount. Worthless. . . . Beware!
I had checked up on the country before leaving, so I knew that there were problems ahead. Still, my negotiating position was weak.
Background information on all African countries is available in the CIA World Factbook. The Online World resources handbook explains where to find it, but you may find it easier to search the book using a Web browser.

Wheaton Fulbright scholars head to Africa and Canada
June 3, 2002 Brooke Bisson '02 and Anna Schultz '02, Wheaton's latest Fulbright scholars, will head to opposite corners of the globe this fall. Bisson, a double major in English literature and music will explore Acadian culture and folk music in Nova Scotia while Schulz, who majored in international relations and political science, will embark on a study of integrated water management practices in Zambia, Africa. Bisson, from Yarmouth, Maine, explored her family's musical and cultural roots through a Wheaton research project on Acadian culture and folk music. ''Acadians are the largest non-English minority group in Maine,'' Bisson reports. ''The question that interests me and many other people of Acadian descent is what defines music as being Acadian. How is it different from being French-Canadian, Cajun, or Quebecois?'' Through her research, which included interviews with her grandmother, a native of Prince Edward Island, Bisson learned how the shared U.S./Canadian history of the Acadian people became inspiration for many Acadian songs and ballads. The Fulbright scholarship will support Bisson's work on a master's degree at Nova Scotia's St. Mary's University. Her program in Atlantic Canada studies will focus on the history, culture and music of the region. After completing her degree, Bisson hopes to work for an arts and culture organization celebrating and showcasing Acadian culture in Maine.

Before the colonial period, the region now known as Zambia was the home of a number of free states. Each having comprehensive economic links with each other and the outside world along trade routes to the east and west coast of Africa. The main exports were copper, ivory and slaves in exchange for textiles, jewellery, salt and hardware.
During the colonial period, the process of industrialisation and urbanisation saw ethnically different people brought together by economic interests. This, as well as the very definite influence of western standards, generated a new culture without conscious effort of politically determined guidelines.
Many of the rural inhabitants however, have retained their indigenous and traditional customs and values. After Independence in 1964, the government recognised the role culture was to play in the overall development of a new nation and began to explore the question of a National identity.
See the Ngoni Dance Group page Music and Dance Quiet beauty, bustle, bounding life or brimming joy characterise many aspects of music and dance in Zambia. Emphasis varies from breathless acrobatic spectacle amid propulsive drumming to fine subtleties of sound and movement. Many traditional instruments are still played throughout the country, although the desire for western instruments increases. The more common ones are the hand piano, a small instrument with iron keys mounted on a rectangular box and plucked by both thumbs. Or the silimba, a xylophone type instrument with a range of flat wooden keys mounted over gourds. The most common of course is the drum and drumming plays an important part of rituals, ceremonies, celebrations and community communication.

Zambia For many years Zambia was the Cinderella of Africa, often overlooked by tourists, and forgotten by the rest of the world as disastrous politics in the 1970s and 1980s led to poverty and the virtual breakdown of the country. But by the 1990s the fortunes of Zambia changed, as a massive shift on the political scene lead to economic reforms and other improvements. Zambia has changed massively for visitors too. For wildlife fans, the excellent national parks are teeming with birds and animals, and boast some of the finest safari camps and lodges in the whole of southern Africa. On top of this, the country shares (with Zimbabwe) Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River - two of the region's major tourist highlights. Apart from sightseeing, these places are also centres for a range of activities ranging from canoeing to white-water rafting and bungee jumping. Sure, for independent travellers Zambia is still a challenge - distances are long, and getting around takes persistence, particularly once you get off the main routes. But for many people, the challenge is the main attraction. Without a doubt, in Zambia you come pretty close to finding the 'real' Africa. Area: 752,600 sq km (290,600 sq mi)
