Country Info Zambia Introduction Zambia General Data Zambia Maps Zambia Culture ... Zambia Time and Date Zambia Culture Back to Top Since the 1950s the cultural scene has been transformed by large-scale urbanization and exposure to exotic influences from Europe, the Americas, and other parts of Africa. Radio and television (one channel only and restricted to the Line of Rail, Chipata, Mongu, and Kasama) have sped this process. Various forms of theatre have flourished. In the last years of colonial rule, dance drama was developed for nationalist ends; the Chikwakwa Theatre, based at the University of Zambia, pioneered politically radical popular drama in the early years of independence. In the 1980s, aid agencies and other bodies promoted “theatre for development,” often unscripted and in vernacular languages, and government departments have used drama to communicate agricultural and health messages. The Zambia Publishing House (formerly the Kenneth Kaunda Foundation) is a government-backed publisher of the works of Zambian authors and school textbooks. The few other publishers are mainly church-supported. Zambian scholars have contributed to knowledge in a wide range of disciplines, often in locally published academic journals, though opportunities for research have been restricted in recent years by general economic difficulties.

Introduction
Zambia is a landlocked country located between the southern rim of the Zaire Basin and the Zambezi River. Zambia has land borders with Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique and Zimbabwe to the southeast, Botswana and Namibia to the south, Angola on the west and Zaire to the northwest.
Most of the landmass in Zambia is a high plateau lying between 3,500 and 4,500 feet above sea level. In the northeast, the Muchinga Mountains exceed 7,000 ft in height. Elevations under 2,000 ft are found in the valleys of the major river systems. Plateau land in the northeastern and eastern regions is broken by the low-lying Luangwa River., and in the western half by the Kafue River. Both rivers are tributaries of the upper Zambezi, the major waterway of the area. The frequent occurrence of rapids and falls prevents through navigation of the Zambezi.

The staple dish in Zambia is a stiff porridge called nshima, commonly made from maize or sometimes sorghum. It's typically served in a communal dish and eaten with the right hand, rolling the nshima into a ball and dipping it into a sauce of meat or vegetables. In areas along rivers and lake shores, fish are also eaten. Popular freshwater types include bream, lake salmon and Nile perch.

PEOPLE
The population
Recent statistics suggest that Zambia's population stands at about ten million, and this is increasing by around 3% per year. About 49% of Zambia's population are under 15 years of age, whilst some 73% of those above age 15 are literate. About 10% of Zambians live in Lusaka. Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Zambian is 42 years. Around 99% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 1% are mostly people of European or Indian origin. However, the statistics say nothing of the warmth that the sensitive visitor can encounter. If you venture into the rural areas, take a local bus, or try to hitchhike with the locals, you will often find that Zambians are curious about you. Chat to them openly, as fellow travellers, and you will find most Zambians to be delightful. They will be pleased to assist you where they can, and as keen to help you learn about them and their country as they are interested in your lifestyle and what brings you to Zambia... CULTURE-ZAMBIA: Annual Ceremony to Mark Migration of Lozi People Penny Dale LUSAKA, Apr 8 (IPS) - - Despite this year's poor rains in the southern African country, Zambia's Lozi people have taken to their boats in the annual Kuomboka ceremony to mark the migration of their traditional ruler from Zambezi flood plain to dry ground. The highly regimented ceremony, which has been held for centuries, is the colourful transfer by boat of the Lozi's leader - known as the Litunga - from his summer palace in the middle of the Zambezi flood plain in Zambia's Western Province to the higher ground of the winter palace. In a blaze of colour, some 100 male canoers, dressed in animal skins and red berets, paddle the king in his black and white royal barge, known as the Nalikwanda. They complete with a model elephant on top, through a series of canals dug out of the floodplain to the winter palace, or Limulunga.
