    Managing Acute and Overuse Disorders
William W. Briner, Jr, MD; Holly J. Benjamin, MD THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 27 - NO. 3 - MARCH 1999 This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables. In Brief: Most volleyball injuries are related to blocking or spiking, both of which involve vertical jumps. The most common acute injuries include ankle and thumb sprains, and common overuse injuries include patellar and shoulder tendinitis, suprascapular neuropathy, and low-back injury. Symptoms will usually resolve with conservative treatment, which may include activity modification, such as reduced jump training or jumping on a sand surface, and technical instruction. Players who have significant symptoms from suprascapular neuropathy may require diagnostic electromyography and MRI before surgical decompression. V and two-player contests on outdoor sand courts. Given the number of players and the potential rigors of the game, acute and overuse injuries are to be expected. Fortunately, most can be managed by primary care physicians. Familiarity with injuries common to volleyball can facilitate diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation and promote prevention.
    Sport-Specific Skills
Volleyball players perform a variety of maneuvers that are unique to the sport, and each poses a risk of injury. Play begins with an underhand or overhead serve, delivered jumping or standing. The opposing team usually starts offensive play with a standard bump-set-spike pattern. With arms extended and the hands held together below the waist, a player will bump or pass the serve by playing the ball off both forearms. The ball is then "set" by a teammate who, with both hands overhead, directs it toward the net, where another teammate jumps and attacks or spikes the ball, using an overhead arm swing. The goal of spiking is to generate a powerful hit into the opponent's court.

    Water Polo
Water polo originated in England during the 1870s, and as legend has it, the sport was developed by spirited young men who wanted to play rugby and cool off at the same time. It soon became popular in the United States and is now a major sport in a number of European countries. Its first appearance in the Olympics was at the 1900 Games where it was the first team sport admitted to the Olympics.

Games are divided into four periods of seven minutes each, with a two-minute interval between periods. One point is scored when the ball is thrown or shoved completely past the face of the goal. In case of a tie, two three-minute overtime periods are held; if necessary, two more are played until a winner is decided. Players wear caps of contrasting colors for easier identification; the official rules stipulate white for one team, blue for the other, and red caps for the goalies.

Women's volleyball improving, but who's watching?
    By Michelle Smith
CBS SportsLine Sports in General Writer
Sept. 10, 1998 Women's volleyball may be one of the best-kept secrets in collegiate sports. Of course, that depends what is considered a secret. More than 4 million fans attended NCAA matches last season. But in the wave of popularity that has swept many women's sports, volleyball still seems to be trying to catch up. Media coverage and television appearances lag far behind the more popular women's basketball. There isn't the same kind of corporate support afforded to women's soccer and hockey at the national-team levels. "This sport is like a weed that won't go away,'' said Stanford coach Don Shaw, whose team is a perennial national power at the collegiate level and has spawned national stars such as Bev and Kim Oden and Nancy Reno. The Cardinal are the defending national champions. "At the grassroots level, thousands and thousands of girls are playing, attendance is growing, and for the most part, the media doesn't pay any attention,'' Shaw said. There is growth in the game. The talent pool deepens every year. And the NCAA tournament will be expanded to 64 teams for the first time this season.
