Volleyball players hit a ball over a net using any part of their bodies in an effort to score points. Points are scored only by the serving team when the receiving team is either unable to return the volleyball over the net or prevent it from touching the court surface. Each score is worth one point. The first team to score fifteen points by a margin of two points, up to a maximum of seventeen, wins the game, or set. (No scoring cap applies to the final game of a match, it must be won by at least two points.) The team that wins two out of three sets wins the volleyball match. What's Needed? A volleyball, sneakers, shorts, and team jersey. (Knee pads are optional.) How Long Is A Match? There is no set time limit for a volleyball match, as each game is played to fifteen points. Team captains flip a coin to determine which side will serve first. There are two-minute breaks between each game; teams switch court sides after each break. Teams are permitted two thirty-second time-outs per game and may use them when the ball is not in play. Dig, Set And Spike!

The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of "volleyball" was played.

Such active participation in games and sports have promoted their physical and mental development. The earliest record of women participating in sports was in 1924, when women played football to raise funds for the victims of a cyclone disaster! But because of the social and cultural outlook and beliefs at that time, the event was generally disapproved and was roundly criticized by the media. In 1935, Myanmar women participated in golf for the first time in Pyay city and in 1936, two Myanmar women Ma Pwa Thin of Myaung Mya and Ma Khin Hla of Yangon participated in the All Myanmar Weight-lifting and Body Building Competition held at the Jubilee Hall, Yangon. This was sensational because weight-lifting was considered a sport only for men and as for the Body Building Competition, Myanmar women were supposed to be modestly dressed and properly covered up. To the astonishment of the audience, the two ladies demonstrated their abilities by lifting 250 lbs in the open class. It was only in 1989, after a lapse of over 50 years that weight-lifting competitions for women made a come-back.

Sport The most popular sports in the Czech Republic are football (soccer), ice hockey, volley-ball, tennis and kickball (an original Czech sport similar to volley-ball in which the players kick the ball over a low net.) The most famous Czech sports grouping is the mass participation Sokol organisation. Although the main goal of Sokol is to promote national health and sports, it played a key role in the national resistance to the Austrian Empire, the Nazi occupation and the Communist regime. Soon after it was founded in 1862, colourful gymnastics rallies were held regularly in Prague until the German occupation in 1938. The Communist regime banned the organisation after its 1948 rally, but Sokol continued to exist abroad. In July 1994, Sokol staged a triumphant return with a rally in Prague. Football Football is the most popular sport in the Czech Republic. The Czech Football Association has run the country’s top league, the 1st league, since l925. The most popular club, AC Sparta Praha, have been remarkably successful in both domestic and European contests. Czechoslovakia were runners-up in the 1934 and 1962 World Cups, European champions in 1976 and the Czech Republic narrowly lost to Germany in the finals of 1996’s European championships held in England. F. Plánicka, I. Bican, J. Masopust, I. Viktor, A. Panenka, Z. Nehoda, T. Skuhravy, K. Poborsky, P. Berger and P. Nedvedare among the most famous Czech footballers. Ice hockey For years Czechoslovakia's national ice hockey teams have ranked among the top five or six national teams in the world. The national ice hockey team have won the World Hockey Championships seven times (the last time in 1996 in Vienna). They came 2nd in the Canada Cup in 1976. Today, Czech ice hockey suffers from a mass exodus of its best players to foreign leagues, especially to the NHL. Among the most famous players to have left are J. Jágr, D. Ha1ek, M. Straka, R. Holík, R. Reichel, M.Rueinský and V. Vujtek. V. Nedomanský, J. Holecek, V. Martinec, I. Hlinka, J. Jágr and D.Hasek are among the most famous Czech ice hockey players.
