Home About Us What's New Site Map ... References Sports Overview Sports training is available to the Kazakhstan population from an early age. The country has a well-developed system of sports schools and clubs for children, as well as specialized schools for more advanced athletes. All in all, the Republic numbers 23,940 sports facilities including 253 sports stadiums, 14,034 gyms, 1,217 shooting ranges, 135 ski resorts, 140 swimming pools. The National Olympic Committee, founded in 1990, plays a large role in the selection and training of individuals for sporting competitions, a process facilitated by the country's many sporting federations and leagues. Since 1990, Kazakhstan athletes have figured prominently in international competitions; the country first competed as an independent nation in the Olympic Games and the Asian Games of 1994. Vladimir Smirnov, Kazakhstan's brilliant skier, won the gold medal for the 50-kilometre cross-country competition in Lillehammer. At the Asian Journalists' Congress, Smirnov was recognized as Best Sportsman of the Year for 1996, and he has been awarded countless other national titles, including "Meritorious Sports Worker" and the National Order. Daulet Turlykhanov is another Kazakhstan athletic leader. A seven-fold USSR champion, prize-winner of the Olympic games in Seoul and Barcelona, Daulet coaches the Kazakhstan's national team in Graeco-Roman wrestling.

U.S. men fall to Chile 2-0 in bronze medal game
Posted: Friday September 29, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Tuesday November 14, 2000 10:14 AM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Veteran striker Ivan Zamorano scored twice as Chile defeated the U.S. 2-0 for the bronze medal and won its first medal of the Olympics. The 33-year-old Inter Milan star drove home a penalty in the 70th minute and then finished a stunning Chilean move for the second six minutes from time. It was Zamorano's fifth and sixth goals of the championship. Zamorano joined the squad only two weeks before the tournament as a replacement for Lazio's Marcelo Salas, who decided not to take part, and moved ahead by himself as the Games' top scorer two ahead of countryman Reinaldo Navia and David Suazo of Honduras. Chile was beaten 2-1 in extra time by Cameroon in the semifinals while the Americans lost 3-1 to Spain.

Click here for more on this story Latest: Wednesday September 20, 2000 09:27 AM AP MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) The U.S. women's soccer team survived the slashes and gashes from the rough Nigerians. Now it's on to the medal round without old nemesis China. Brandi Chastain, Kristine Lilly and Shannon MacMillan scored as the Americans won their group Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Nigeria. The U.S. team finished its difficult first-round schedule with a 2-0-1 record and will play Brazil in the semifinals Sunday in Canberra. But there will be no rematch of last year's World Cup final. China was eliminated with a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the 'Group of Death,' leaving Norway vs. Germany as the other semifinal. Visitors: Main page The Federation News Statistics ... segas-gr@otenet.gr S.E.G.A.S - Short History SEGAS has always played leading role in both national and international sports, since it was the first Federation ever founded (1897) and has had, for many decades, under it?s wings almost all the sports (football, basket ball, volley ball, swimming, tennis, fencing, cycling, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, riding, shooting, judo etc). Later on, separate federations have been created for each of these sports. Literally speaking, we could say that SEGAS had "organised" our sports and it?s executives were inspired and visionary pionners, aiming to the promotion of the Olympic idea and the Hellenic civilization. The foundation of the federation came as a desire for a better organisation of sports in our country.
At the time of proclamation of independence, efforts have been made for a more systematic "teaching" of sports on schools. Long before the carrying out of the first olympiads of modern era in Athens, 4 called "Zappies" Olympiads were already held, revealing the proeoccupation for a better preparation of the athletes and organisation of the games. The revival and the successful carrying out in Athens of the 1st Olympic Games of the Modern Era, resulted to the increasing number of athletes, the organisation of regional competitions and the creation of new clubs (37 at that time). The first movement towards the foundation of a federation was made in Patra on February 20th 1895, when "Panahaikos" Athletic club called in a meeting the delegates of the following clubs: "GE Patra", "Panellinios AC", "Ethnikos GC" and "Panetolikos" to discuss the carrying out of preliminary competitions in view of the 1st Olympic Games in Athens.

Waiting for the Olympic Games
Written by Saara Lamberg, Finland
Phillis, 32, Greece
A Greek salesman Phillis likes the Olympic games a lot. He watches specially all the classic sports and his favorite sport is running. Phillis thinks that Athens is well prepared for the Olympics and he is looking forward to them.
Linda, 17, Finland
A Finnish student Linda thinks that Olympic games are a nice event but she isn't too interested in them. Her favourite sports are athletics, specially running. In her opinion these kind of big happenings can be quite dangerous when they take place in such a big city as Athens. "There are so many people here and I guess this place will be all crowded and messed up during Olympics." Linda wishes that Olympic games will be a peaceful event with a lot of sport spirit.
Vera, 20, The Netherlands
Vera is a Dutch woman who doesn't usually watch a lot of sports. She likes the opening ceremony of the Olympics, though. She is pretty sporty herself, she goes skating and plays volley ball. Although she likes Olympics, she thinks that too much money is spent on them. If she went to watch the Olympics, she would like to see some other cultural events like street theatre and music, too.

Sport
Kazakstan scored many a spectacular victory at the Olympic Games, at various world championships, cup-ties, Asian Games. Thus, in 1994 Kazakstani sportsmen 122 times rose upon the podium of major international competitions. A fair example for perspective Olympic champions would, no doubt, serve the unprecedented success scored by brilliant skier Vladimir Smirnov who won all supreme sports titles. T cap it all he won the gold Olympic medal at the most prestigious 50 km race held in Lillehammer. One has every ground to refer Daulet Turlykhanov to genuine leaders of Kazakstan. Seven-fold USSR champion, prize-winner of Olympic games in Seoul and Barcelona-such was by far incomplete list of athlet's achievements when he became chief coach of the Kazakstan's national team in Graeco-Roman wrestling. Even being the chief coach Turlykhanov did not abandon competitions on the carpet. The result was a golden medal at the world championship. At the Asian Games in Hiroshima Daulet he too won the championships. Good luck followed the Kazakstanis at their debut in Asian games of 1994 in Hiroshima. Our sportsmen took part in 28 events of the Asiade and won 25 gold, 26 silver and 26 bronze medals. The year of 1995 has also brought a pretty fair number of sport records. Apart from brilliant achievements gained by Vladimir Smirnov in ski racing who won 3 gold medals at the winter Olympic games, silver prize-winners of world championships became skater Lyudmila Prokasheva, track-and-field athletes Olga Shishigina and Igor Potapovich, boxer Bulat Zhumadilov. Cup-tie prizes have been won by the Kazakstanis in such events as shooting, modern pentathlon, diving and weightlifting. At the sports-and-athletics contest among NIS countries in Sanc-Petersburg, the team of Kazakstan won 65 medals including 19 gold ones. Champions at the contest became boxers, swimmers, fencers, women's volley-ball team, sportsmen representing taekwaendo and callistenics. On the podium of honour rose Kazakstani prize-winners in track-and-field athletics, diving and free-style and Graeco-Roman wrestling.
