Web site addresses for Europe and the Near East from ca 400 AD to 1500 AD. AOL members may want to check in the Learning and Culture channel, then click on History and then access ORB from there. Or they can use this as a handy reference page to reach ORB and other sites. These are some of the more useful locations for information on medieval history. Although we have some of the most important sites, ORB, Labrynth, Byzantine Studies, Medieval Source Book, and Castles on the Web, we obviously need many more. Last changed on 5 December 1997. (please note that if you put relevant titles on email messages they're less likely to get mistaken for spam and deleted unread) Did Vikings have horns on their helmets?
No. Viking helmets were designed to provide protection to the head by deflecting blows, so they needed to have smooth curved surfaces.
It is possible that the myth about Viking helmets began because some of the conical helmets had cheek guards which could be worn folded up when the Vikings were attacking a target such as a monastery where they wouldn't expect anyone to be fighting back. Monks were among the few Early Medieval people who could write, so their stories of the Vikings are the ones we hear most often. What did Vikings wear?

Re-enactment Events
Full list of events for 2003 Feasts (normally held in February and November each year) involve eight to ten courses of early medieval food, as well as stories, music, games and dancing to add to the atmosphere.
The guests wear medieval costumes and use wooden or pottery bowls and cups.
Bread trenchers (slightly stale loaves, hollowed out to make a bowl) can also be used for food. In medieval times the bread trenchers, soaked in sauces from the feast, would be given to the poor after the event. Good reference books for medieval recipes include:
"The British Museum Cookbook"- by M. Berriedale-Johnson - (0-7141-1759-5)
"Food and Cooking in Medieval Britain" - by M. Black - (1-85074-081-X)
The Viking Sagas contain descriptions of feasts taking place. Members of Lothene often take part in displays at Scottish Castles organised by Historic Scotland and also travel to re-enactment events all over Britain as well as occasionally providing film extras . They have also done promotional work for films such as "A Knights Tale" and "Eric the Viking" and for television series, such as the BBC's "Ivanhoe".
