    Residency Programs
General Information About VMTH Residency Programs The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, offers a number of residency positions each year. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an approved School of Veterinary Medicine and a one-year internship or equivalent practice experience. The resident selection process will consider academic achievement, career objectives, letters of recommendation, interpersonal skills, clinical skills, interest in teaching, and relevant experience. Applications from graduates of foreign veterinary schools are also considered, provided that they meet the minimum requirements specified above and have command of the English language. where they will handle casework and teach veterinary students under the direct supervision of a faculty member in that specialty. Unless specialty Board requirements conflict, the remaining 25 percent of their time may be used for seminars, rounds, research, elective rotations in other specialties to provide broader personal advancement, and for vacations. As in most advanced training programs, much of the initiative is left to the individual, and the benefit derived from the program will be directly related to the effort the resident is willing to expend. It is anticipated that each resident will present several rounds or seminars each year, and author at least one manuscript for publication.

CVM Home Your Pet is Going to be Anesthetized... Topics Index Terminology This information is not meant to be a substitute for veterinary care. Always follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian. Before the anesthetic procedure
There are many types of anesthetic regimes including the use of drugs that are injected into a vein or muscle or inhalant drugs that are breathed in and out of the body. Your veterinarian will select the anesthetic regime based on the health of your pet and on the type of surgical procedure to be performed. Tranquilizers are often given before a general anesthetic. Pre-Anesthetic Evaluation
Many anesthetic techniques involve the administration of a sedative or tranquilizer before the anesthetic agent is given. Tranquilizers and sedatives can allow for less of the general anesthetic to be used. pre-anesthetic sedation may calm a pet excited by unfamiliar surroundings. Excited animals may require higher doses of general anesthetics and excitement may predispose to development of an irregular heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia). pre-anesthetic sedation may also make recovery from anesthesia smoother. An endotracheal tube and intravenous catheter are often placed prior to general anesthesia.
