World War I, "The Great War", "the war to end all wars", had wrought its destruction for four long years. Over 10 million lives had been lost forever. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, peace was finally declared. A permanent truce, known as an "armistice", became official and people around the world rejoiced.

Word Version FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 20, 2000
New York Teen Crafts National Veterans Day Poster
Fullam, who graduates this spring and plans to join the ROTC program at the New York Institute of Technology when he begins classes there in the fall, said he was surprised to learn that he had won. "I just put my thoughts into pictures and tried to use pictures that describe Veterans Day most accurately," Fullam said. He added that he "wanted people to think about what those who served in the military have done, because there’s more to serving than just what we see." The poster contest is sponsored by the Veterans Day National Committee and managed by individual state Veterans Affairs directors as a way for high school students to express their thoughts about veterans through their art. The winning poster was selected from finalists representing 21 states and one U.S. territory. http://www.va.gov/pubaff/vetsday/index.htm

Arts and Crafts America in Conflict
As a class, create a timeline of American history, including each of the wars in which the U.S. has taken a part.
Divide students into pairs or small groups. Assign each pair or group one war. Encourage students to research the conflict and its historical framework to the best of their abilities.
Each member of the team should sketch one picture related to the conflict or its time period, then write a sentence or two explaining the relationship of their picture to the conflict. Arrange the pictures around the appropriate war period on the time line.
Each group member should write a short essay summarizing the conflict he or she studied and explaining how the sacrifices of veterans helped to preserve America's freedom.
Proud of the Red, White, and Blue
Give each student a 2" x 8" strip of posterboard as well as one-half sheet each of red, white, and blue construction paper. Have students use construction paper to decorate the posterboard, creating a patriotic bookmark.
Very younger children can create attractive bookmarks by tearing paper into small pieces and gluing it neatly onto the posterboard strip.
