of Alternative Medicine With this page we bring the viewer a listing of major Colleges/Universities/Schools of Alternative Medicine in the U.S. and around the world. The interest in getting back to alternative/holostic/complimentary medicine as well as agriculture (See SAFE below) is a "headlong rush" from that offered by Western medicine and its "drug - lets hope this does it (cover the symptoms) approach", which is just not working. ( Read Notice ) Over 48% of people desiring healthcare (in the U.S.), according to various publications and sources this last year (1998) went for the "holistic" alternative approach. As a result, the names of educational institutions, many which have been teaching and fully accredited for their students, are getting substantial increases in enrollments. We thought our viewers would like to look in Karinya for these sources, thus, we present our list, which is expected to grow rapidly. Please give us your comments and suggestions to make our web site more responsive to your needs.

Alternative Break Citizenship Schools
By Michelle Hargrave As the current coordinator of AWOL (Alternative Week of Off-Site Learning) at BVU, I had the opportunity to attend the ABC's (Alternative Break Citizenship Schools) in Salt Lake City, Utah this past summer. The ABC's is designed to teach participants the components necessary to start or strengthen a quality alternative break program on their campus. This weeklong intensive training session combined workshops, discussions, service, reflection, and speakers within an actual alternative break experience. The ABC's teach participants by modeling the components needed for an alternative break. Not only was I able to learn all the elements of creating and strengthening the AWOL program at BVU through the ABC's, but I was also able to engage in experiential learning by participating in a model of an alternative break. 30 students and faculty from different colleges all over the U.S. and myself, partnered with an agency called Tree Utah to engage in community service. Tree Utah is an organization composed of volunteers with a mission to "improve Utah's quality of life for present and future generations by enhancing the environment through planting, stewardship, and education". The participants of the ABC's and myself planted and watered trees in the mountains of Utah as our service project. I never realized how much work it really was to water trees until I was one of the volunteers who carried 2-1 gallon milk jugs filled with water in each hand in order to water one tree at a time, amongst thousands. It was hard work, and yet it was empowering to realize that I, myself, a small spot in the universe was making a difference.

EDUCATION IN UTAH
Cove school and pupils, Cache Valley
In common with other nineteenth century Americans, many Utahns desired formal schooling for their children. But desiring education and schools, is not synonymous with actually having education and schools. Social, political, and economic conditions can thwart aspirations and reduce educational commitment to expressions of rhetoric. Even mandates for education that are rooted in religious ideals are frequently modified by inescapable realities.
Utah schools in the nineteenth century reflected the patchwork quilt of aspiration, apathy, rhetoric and actual commitment which characterized much of century's education at the national level-some communities were pockets of educational excellence and others displayed only minimal commitment. Some parents wanted as much formal schooling as was possible for their children; others were hostile to book learning. There were also communities (such as Draper and the Second Ward in Salt Lake City) stretched themselves economically to support schools. Much depended on local economic circumstances and the personal commitment of local ecclesiastical leadership.
Most elementary schools in the 1850s and 1860s were organized on the basis of Mormon Wards with the church meeting house serving as the school house during the week. These ward schools differed widely in their curriculum offerings and the quality of their teaching. They were in essence quasi-public Mormon schools, controlled by local trustees appointed by Mormon bishops; they reflected Mormon community values, used Mormon scriptures as supplemental texts and supported in part by tuition from patrons and local taxes. As early as 1851 the office of territorial superintendent of schools was created, promoting the centralization of school policy and curriculum at least in theory if not in practice. During the pioneer period up to 1869, in the words of John C. Moffitt, "very little was done in Utah for education beyond the rudiments of learning."
