H-Net Teaching and Technology Essays
Series Editor - Steven Mintz H-Net is commissioning a series of essays on teaching and technology. RE: An Inquiry Approach to Teaching U.S. History
By Dawn Riggs, San Diego State University As a colleague who struggles to make the best use of the "abundance" factor provided by the web, it is refreshing and encouraging to be able to share ideas and observations with others of like mind. I am a full time lecturer at San Diego State University (currently on the 2003 job market) and I usually teach US Survey to Reconstruction as a lower division course and also as a specialty for students on a Teacher Ed track. I abandoned textbooks some time ago, frustrated by the very issues McClymer voiced. My teaching philosophy is to allow students to be the historians, and to take their learning experience into their own hands by "doing history." That said, I have used my own interactive website, made use of many other websites, used film, power points, etc. Students have gone "into the field" to do history including cemetery projects, oral history projects, created teaching modules, etc. Every semester I struggle to find new ways or revamp projects to produce the best results possible. In the end I believe that my methods and philosophy have had an impact on students and how they think about history. My teaching evaluations are strong, students often tell me I've changed the way they thing about the subject and share horror stories of history classes past.

Introduction
Organized on March 2, 1897, the Texas State Historical Association is the oldest learned society in the state. Its mission is to foster the appreciation, understanding, and teaching of the rich and unique history of Texas and by example and through programs and activities encourage and promote research, preservation, and publication of historical material affecting the state of Texas. At the invitation of the president of the University of Texas, the Association established its headquarters on the campus soon after its inception in 1897, and it has remained there ever since. The University enhanced this relationship in 1940 when it established a research center in Texas history as a part of the College of Liberal Arts and named Professor Walter Prescott Webb , a member of the Department of History and the director of the Association, as the director of Research in Texas History (now the Center for Studies in Texas History) as well. The Association works in conjunction with the Center for Studies in Texas History in developing its programs and, for all practical purposes, the Association and the Center are synonymous. The Association is an educational organization, designated 501(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service.

  • 1. What jobs are available for archaeologists?
Professional archaeologists work for universities, colleges, museums, the federal government, state governments, in private companies, and as consultants. They teach, conduct field investigations, analyze artifacts and sites, and publish the results of their research. The minimal educational requirement to work as a field archaeologist is a B.A. or B.S. degree with a major in anthropology or archaeology and previous field experience (usually obtained by spending a summer in an archaeological field school or participating as a volunteer, see question 5). While this is sufficient to work on an archaeological field crew, it is not sufficient to move into supervisory roles. Supervisory positions require a graduate degree, either an M.A./M.S. or a Ph.D. Academic Positions Museum Positions . Museums may be connected with a university or independent. Museum curators conduct research, publish the results, give public presentations, prepare displays, and conserve the museum collections. Museum positions require a graduate degree (M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.). Museum positions are usually full-year appointments.

ON PETITION FOR WRIT OF CERTIORARI TO THE SUPREME COURT OF KENTUCKY
    No. 80-321.
    Decided November 17, 1980
    [JUSTICE REHNQUIST, dissenting.]
Read about the Ten Commandments in American History Held: A Kentucky statute requiring the posting of a copy of the Ten Commandments, purchased with private contributions, on the wall of each public school classroom in the State has no secular legislative purpose, and therefore is unconstitutional as violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. While the state legislature required the notation in small print at the bottom of each display that "[t]he secular application of the Ten Commandments is clearly seen in its adoption as the fundamental legal code of Western Civilization and the Common Law of the United States," such an "avowed" secular purpose is not sufficient to avoid conflict with the First Amendment. The pre-eminent purpose of posting the Ten Commandments, which do not confine themselves to arguably secular matters, is plainly religious in nature, and the posting serves no constitutional educational function. Prior to 1925:
Creation Science was the prevailing belief system before the rise of geology in the late 18th Century. The early European scientists, from Copernicus to Galileo to Newton believed (as did almost all Christians in their time) in a literal interpretation of the Bible's account of creation. Historians have made m any estimates for the date of creation , including 3761, 3928, 4004, and 4456 BCE. The most generally accepted date was by Bishop Ussher: 4004-OCT-22 BCE Belief in Usher's date continued among Christian scientists, until the early 18th century, when it became obvious to most researchers that geological processes were exceedingly slow, and must have been accomplished over incredibly long periods of time. A 6000 year old earth was not possible. As geologists promoted theories which indicated that the earth's age predated the Biblical creation story, opposition arose in many religious organizations. For example, Ellen G. White, an early prophet of the Seventh-day Adventists, reacted to the debate about the fossil record of past species by stating that they were deposited by the flood. Friction between science and theology increased when Darwin published The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

This free software is available HERE Content Standards 8.5 X 11 poster Introduction: In 1993, Alaskans embarked on a campaign to bring higher standards and accountability to their public school system. The cornerstone of this effort was the development of content standards in ten core subject areas. The standards represent what Alaskans want students to know and be able to do as a result of their public schooling. This booklet presents the content standards and their associated key elements for English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Government and Citizenship, Skills for a Healthy Life, Arts, World Languages, and Technology. Scores of Alaskanseducators, parents, business people, and professionals, from all areas of the stateworked together to develop and refine the standards. Before adopting them, the Board of Education heard comments from hundreds of other Alaskans about what they liked and disliked in the standards. Even before the last set of standards was adopted in December, 1995, teams of educators were working on curriculum frameworks, plans for how to teach the new standards and how to integrate them into the classroom. Another team examined assessment issues, answering the critical question: "How will we know if students are reaching the standards?"

The Fine Arts galleries at the Museum feature twentieth century American art, with important works by artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Alexander Calder, John Marin, and Louise Nevelson. Of course, there is a special focus on New Jersey artists. A broad collection of American and European prints, drawings and photographs can be enjoyed. The Natural History galleries feature the development of earth and the origins of life. Visitors will explore the worlds of New Jersey's dinosaurs, of Ice Age mastodons, and of today's wildlife. New Jersey's highlands, piedmont cities (lying at the foot of a mountain) farms, coastal plains, and seashore can be experienced through many exhibits.

University of Colorado professor believed to be the first woman to teach at a state university. From the Boulder Museum of history.
    http://www.boulderhistorymuseum.org/history.rippon.html
Mary Rippon In the dusk a new moon shone on the snowclad foothills. The train stopped and a young woman stepped down. Dr. Joseph Sewall, first president of the University of Colorado, was meeting her. He asked, "How does it look to you?" Looking West to the mountains which reminded her of the Alps, she replied "Glorious!" Miss Mary Rippon was born on May 25, 1850 in Lisbon, Illinois. She graduated from Illinois Normal School where Dr. Joseph Sewall, MD. was one of her professors. After teaching in a one room rural school, Mary went in search of a college degree. She traveled to Europe and studied languages and history throughout the continent until 1877. Upon her return Dr. Sewall persuaded her to come to Colorado's new university. Mary Rippon, third faculty member at the university, arrived soon after. It was January, 1878. Old Main was set on a barren, sometimes muddy hill. A black bull lived in a nearby pasture. Beyond the fence were a pigsty, a chicken coop and a stable. Miss Rippon and Dr. Sewall's wife diligently planted flowers, shrubs, and grass, hoping to beautify the landscape of the university campus. Historians believe that Mary Rippon was the first woman to teach at a state university. Within three years of her arrival, Miss Rippon became a full professor and departmental head of Germanic languages, a position she held until her 1909 retirement. She lived in Boulder at 2463 N. Broadway (still standing) as a proper Victorian lady. A popular teacher, Miss Rippon shared savings from her $1200 annual salary with needy students. She often stayed on campus to counsel and befriend women boarders as the unofficial women's dean. A faculty daughter wrote, "Beautiful Mary Rippon was like a piece of Dresden, but she must have had a stern jaw somewhere to be dean of women in those early days..."
