It is not surprising that gay people are reluctant to reach out to the very institution that oppresses them. Yet, gay, lesbian, [transgender], and bisexual people have no less need for warmth, caring, and affirmation than anyone else who calls the liberal church their religious home." -Rev. David Morgan

25. UNITARIANISM--WHAT IS IT?

UNITARIANISMWHAT IS IT? A sermon by
Rev. A. Powell Davies, D.D.
Minister, All Souls' Church (Unitarian)
Washington, DC February 24, 1946
In Time news magazine a week ago there appeared a letter criticizing an article on Unitarianism which had recently been printed in that journal. The article had implied that Unitarians hold certain beliefs in common; the letter denied that this was possible. "Unitarians," it said, "are so divergent in their beliefs that it is almost impossible to set down any one thing upon which the group does agree." Which is, of course, as any thoughtful person might expect, a gross exaggeration. No movement holds together for as long a time as has Unitarianism without substantial areas of agreement.
Yet, the mistake which the writer of the letter makes is a very common one. Because traditional churches are based upon a system of required beliefs, i.e., upon a creed, he assumes that a church without a creed can have no basis of agreement. Whereas, for Unitarians, the deliberate intention not to have a creed is itself a most emphatic basis of agreement. Let us look at that for a moment or two. For understanding Unitarianism, it makes a good beginning.

nitarianism is "the form of Christianity that denies the doctrine of the Trinity , believing that God exists only in one person. While there were previous antitrinitarian movements in the early Christian Church, like Arianism and Monarchianism, modern Unitarianism originated in the period of the Protestant Reformation" ( Columbia Encyclopedia ). And the Oxford English Dictionary defines a Unitarian as one "who affirms the unipersonality of the Godhead, especially as opposed to an orthodox Trinitarian; spec. a member or adherent of a Christian religious body or sect holding this doctrine." According to Britannica Online , English Unitarianism begins with John Biddle (1615-62), an English Socinian, whose knowledge of the Greek text of the New Testament convinced him that the doctrine of the Trinity was not of scriptural origin, published his Unitarian convictions in Twelve Arguments Drawn out of Scripture . . . http://www.uuottawa.com/before-1600s.html
The Sixteenth Century: Antitrinitarians and Toleration From "The Epic of Unitarianism: Original Writings from the History of Liberal Religion" by David B. Parke Until the sixteenth century western Europe was Roman Catholic. A few scattered groups - the Waldenses, Hussites, and Bogomils, to name three - had rebelled against the Church, but without widespread effect. The first cataclysmic protest against Catholicism was initiated in 1517 by a German monk, Martin Luther, who held that men were justified not by submission to the Church, but by faith in God. When his protests resulted in excommunication, Luther assumed the leadership of a new religious movement, Protestantism.
The Protestant Reformation spread quickly to Switzerland, Italy, France, the Low Countries and Scandinavia. Seeing in it an ally against oppression of every kind, princes, peasants, merchants, and scholars flocked to the new movement which, however, grew so rapidly that it was impossible for one man to control it. The Lutheran Reformation was more than an ecclesiastical revolution. By sundering Catholicism's structure of authority it precipitated a social upheaval out of which, in the succeeding centuries, European Nationalism, modern democracy, and capitalistic civilization have emerged.
Every revolution that seeks to effect permanent changes in the social structure must retain elements of continuity from the old social structure. For the early reformers, especially Luther and John Calvin, uniformity of Christian doctrine was such an element. After wavering, they chose to retain the Catholic doctrines virtually intact - excluding those ascribing supreme authority to the Roman pope. One of the items retained was the Athanasian creed. But many Protestants, especially Anabaptists in Germany, Switzerland and Holland, were dissatisfied with the traditional dogmas. Believing that the Bible should be the only rule of faith, they held that Christian doctrine needed a reformation too. The first strong voice of radical Protestantism was that of a Spaniard, Michael Servetus. The epic of Unitarianism begins with him.

The distinction between Trinitarianism and unitarianism is that homageto Christ is in Socinianism, Arianism and unitarianism (No. 185).
http://www.logon.org/english/s/p185.html
Socinianism, Arianism and Unitarianism (No. 185) (Edition 1.0 19961221-19961221) The term Socinianism has been applied quite indiscriminately over a large body of anti-trinitarian doctrine. The Godhead is the central issue of Socinianism. From both the Catholic and the Unitarian point of view, they rightly held that God is absolutely simple. They concluded that distinction of persons is destructive to that simplicity. From this logic, they denied the Trinity as logically unsound. The distinction between Trinitarianism and Unitarianism is that homage to Christ is in view of his relationship to the Father and of a secondary type - whereas, the Trinitarians hold it is of the cult of the latria , where he is in fact God, as the Father is God. http://www.logon.org and http://www.ccg.org Socinianism, Arianism and Unitarianism The term Socinianism has been applied quite indiscriminately over a large body of anti-trinitarian doctrine. The term is derived from Lelius Socinius (1526-1562) and his nephew Faustus Socinius (1539-1604), natives of Sienna. The sect arose before Faustus came into contact with it, but it owes its individuality to him. A secret society was formed at Vicenza in the diocese of Venice to discuss the Trinity. Among the members were George Blandrata (physician), Alciatus, Gentilis and Lelio Socinius. Lelius (or Lelio) Socinius was a priest of Sienna and the friend of Bullinger, Calvin and Melancthon. The object of the society was the promotion of anti-Trinitarianism. The society was broken up and its members fled to Poland where they were again persecuted.

History:
The Danish Unitarian Church was founded in 1900.
Before the Unitarians who fled Eastern Europe settled in England and Holland, they attempted to get permission to come to Denmark. The Danish King, after consulting with the Bishops of the Danish Lutheran State Church, refused.
Unitarianism came to Norway in the late 1800's via Kristofer Janson who had been educated as a Unitarian minister in USA. The Norwegian Composer Edward Grieg became involved in Unitarianism, along with his Danish wife Nina. It was through influences from both Norway and England that Unitarianism final made it to Denmark. Nina Grieg moved back to Copenhagen after her husbands death. She was a famous Concert Pianist, and raised a good deal of money for our church, and donated most of the money for the organ in our beautiful church building, which was completed in 1927. Unitarianism died out in Norway, most likely because of the rapid growth of Humanism in that country. However, it flourished in Denmark where it was at first hoped that the State Church would become liberal enough to encompass Unitarianism. At one point there were three congregations in Denmark. Today the one in Copenhagen is the only one left, and there are no congregations in either Norway or Sweden, but recently one has formed in Finland. Our first Minister was Uffe Birkedal, who was a liberal theologian educated at the University of Copenhagen, where the emphasis was to educate Ministers for the Danish Lutheran State Church. At this time our Church was clearly a very liberal Christian Church.

Leaders: Alan Ruston is the president of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, 2002-03. The president changes every year. Community profile: There are approximately 6,000 Unitarians in Britain, in congregations run according to the principle of "congregational polity" - that is, they choose their own ministers democratically and have no hierarchy imposed upon them by the General Assembly. There are also about 3,000 Non-Subscribing Presbyterians in Northern Ireland, many of whom will also be Unitarians. Important dates: Christian festivals are widely celebrated in unitarian congregations, but ministers will interpret these according to his own conscience and the sensitivities of the congregation. Unitarians do not, for example, believe in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    Introduction
Unitarians and Universalists are religious groups who trace their heritage to certain unorthodox theological views in the early church and the Reformation period. They formed their respective churches in Hungary, Romania and Poland in the 16th century and in England, the United States, and other countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Believing that God is One, they deny the deity of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity. Unitarians assert that there are many members of orthodox churches who are "Unitarian without knowing it."! Though their views have been influenced by past development and change, modern American Unitarians see themselves as freed from tradition and committed to open inquiry and to advancing scientific truth, rather than to Christian origins. Unitarians in other lands view themselves similarly, but are more attached to a liberal Protestant tradition. They believe that religion is universal rather than specifically Christian. top Historical development Unitarian and Universalist views in the early church The New Testament contains a variety of doctrines about the status of Jesus Christ. One of them is that he was a man adopted by God to proclaim the coming kingdom. The Ebionites, an early Jewish-Christian sect that called Jesus the Son of man and the true prophet, believed that he was a man who was miraculously endowed and who became the Messiah ("anointed one") because he obeyed the Jewish law.
