About this s... The Name Plans Paintings ... London
The first page I put up containing information about Trinidad and Tobago, my native country, attempted to include rather a lot about the history of the countries. However, I am not a history student , so most of what I said was inaccurate, badly put, or merely wrong as was pointed out to me, at length, by a friend of mine . So I will try to limit the amount of hard, factual material on this page to a minimum, and leave telling you about Trinidad to the experts or at least those who profess to be experts; hopefully their quality of web design is no indication of the extent of their expertise.
Where is Trinidad?
Should you not be bored enough to follow the link to our tourism site, the republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a miniscule nation consisting of two small islands in the Caribbean. If you don't know where the Caribbean is and I've met a surprising number of people who do then I suggest you bone up on your geography . We are right at the Southern end of the Caribbean Sea, just off the North-West coast of Venezuela (only about 12 miles away, in fact).

History
A link Columbus came upon the islands of Trinidad and Tobago on his third journey to the New World, in 1498. He named the larger island La Trinidad (the Holy Trinity) for the three summits located around the southern bay where he landed. Although Trinidad was initially settled by the Spanish, British forces invaded in 1797 and declared it a colony, which it remained until 1962. Tobago, on the other hand, has a much more tangled history. The small island was fought over by the British, Spanish, Dutch and French throughout three centuries, in addition to being constantly raided by pirates. Finally, in 1803, the British won the island from the French and established a lasting peace there. Afterward, a lucrative sugar trade was founded and Tobago grew to dominate the sugar industry for decades. England made Tobago a ward of its larger neighboring island, Trinidad, in 1899.

    GEOGRAPHY
Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Lesser Antilles, located close to the South American continental shelf (see fig. 1). Trinidad lies 11 kilometers off the northeast coast of Venezuela and 130 kilometers south of the Grenadines. It is 60 kilometers long and 80 kilometers at its maximum breadth and comprises an area of 4,828 square kilometers. Trinidad appears rectangular in shape with three projecting peninsular corners. Tobago is located thirty kilometers northeast of Trinidad, from which it is separated by a channel thirty-seven kilometers wide. The island is 42 kilometers long and 13 kilometers wide, with a total area of 300 square kilometers. Tobago is cigar-shaped in appearance and has a northeast-southwest alignment. Geologically, the islands are not part of the Antillean arc. Rather, Trinidad was once part of the South American mainland, and Tobago is part of a sunken mountain chain related to the continent. The islands are now separated from the continent of South America by the Gulf of Paria; a nineteen-kilometer-wide northern passage Dragon's Mouths; and a fourteen-kilometer-wide southern passage Serpent's Mouth (see fig. 6). Trinidad is traversed by three distinct mountain ranges that are a continuation of the Venezuelan coastal cordillera. The Northern Range, an outlier of the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, consists of rugged hills that parallel the coast. This range rises into two peaks. The highest, El Cerro del Aripo, is 940 meters high; the other, El Tucuche, reaches 936 meters. The Central Range extends diagonally across the island and is a low-lying range with swampy areas rising to rolling hills; its maximum elevation is 325 meters. The Caroni Plain, composed of alluvial sediment, extends southward, separating the Northern Range and Central Range. The Southern Range consists of a broken line of hills with a maximum elevation of 305 meters.

Trinidad and Tobago Overview of Trinidad and Tobago Photo courtesy of Geoff Bolan You remember the saying about taking life's lemons and making lemonade? The people of Trinidad went one better: They took old oil drums and created a unique music that has become the soundtrack to tropical relaxation. By contrast, Tobago, the other island in this Caribbean nation, is more like the dreamy picture that comes to mind when you hear a steel drum: swaying palms and fishing villages, sandy beaches and azure seas teeming with fish. The island moves at a more leisurely tempo than Trinidad, but with this kind of unspoiled scenery and uncrowded atmosphere, it's a slow dance that no one is in a hurry to end.
