Gwembe Tonga 3 - The Geography The Gwembe Valley is formed by the Zambezi River as it cuts across southern Africa. The valley forms the boundary between Rhodesia and Zambia. In the late 1950's a dam was built on the lower Zambezi, just below the valley, forming Lake Kariba. Due to the permanent flooding of their traditional farmlands, the Valley Tonga were relocated. Although their traditional way of life was forever disrupted, the data collected by the anthropologists sent in to assess the impact of the relocation, as well as the causes of endemic famine in the area, forms the basis of this simulation.

Overview of Ha'apai Off the beaten path but easily accessible, Ha'apai is central in both Tonga's geography and history. In the middle of the kingdom, 155km (96 miles) north of Nuku'alofa and 108km (67 miles) south of Vava'u, Ha'apai consists of numerous small, atoll-like islands scattered across the sea. The largest and most often visited, Lifuka and Foa, are linked by a causeway. On the horizon to their west sits the active volcano Tofua, where puffs of steam spew from the rim above its crater lake, and the perfectly shaped cone of its inactive neighbor, Kao. The Dutchman Abel Tasman landed on one of the islands in 1643. Capt. James Cook was so impressed with the Tongans' hospitality when he visited Lifuka in 1773 and 1777 that he named the group the "Friendly Islands" (he sailed away unaware that the local chief had plotted to do him in). Fletcher Christian and the Bounty mutineers cast Capt. William Bligh adrift in a longboat off Tofua in 1789. In 1806 the locals ransacked the British privateer
