Tibet's History When trying to justify a cause, there is a tendency to interpret historical events in a way that attempts to change reality. To do this, some events will be exaggerated, leaving out certain information, or just ignored altogether. The government of China has done this when they say that Tibet has undeniably been an inseparable part of China for 700 years. Because of how many historical events have to be ignored for this statement to be accepted, it is easily denied. However, when trying to justify the pursuit of a Tibet that is not subjugated to the authority of the Chinese government, there can be the same tendency to interpret history. When trying to claim that Tibet has never been influenced by China, this statement can easily be proven false, which can be enough for some people to believe that Tibet is indeed an inseparable part of China, which is also false. But single truths will often be used to justify dozens of lies, which is why there should be a review of historical events in the region as told from multiple sources, including both websites owned by the Chinese government and websites that support the Free Tibet movement. With greater study, there would no doubt be a lot more historical events found that could be considered significant, but here are some of the biggest ones. The conclusions to be drawn should not be dictated by the following accounts of history. Everyone should be free to make their own search for truth, and decide for themselves.

Just yesterday (June 4) I was visiting the UCSB campus when I learned of the article written by Jiefeng Zhou titled "Filtering Out the Propaganda of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile" in the Daily Nexus (June 1), and feel that it is my responsibility to respond to his statements. It seems very clear to me that he is repeating the propaganda that the Communist Chinese government has been repeating for decades. Even though in his letter he states, "I should make it clear that I am not speaking on behalf of any government or organization (my father, who is a communist, always calls me 'Liberal J')," it seems that he isn't aware of the propaganda lens through which he sees the Tibetan situation. Does he know that several Chinese who had lived in Tibet have reported and written books about the actual situation in Tibet after leaving China and coming to the West? Is he even aware of the hundreds of articles written by foreigners who have seen with their own eyes the situation of the Tibetan people under the Chinese Communist rule, most notably by such human rights organizations as Amnesty International?

It separated from India, Nepal, and Buhtan by the Himilayas. Tibet was apart from th rest of the world because of it's remoteness and it's lack of roads. In the 600s, Tibet became a great and mighty kingdom. Writing and Buddhism came from the country's southern border ,India. In the 1600's The Dalai Lama became the ruler of Tibet. Tibet fell to China in the early 1700's.Now, Tibetans practice another type of Buddhism called Lamaism. Some people are monks who live in monistaries. For about 300 years, the Dalai Lama was the country's ruler and the Panchen Lama was his spiritual head. Chinese hands clasped tightly on Tibet until 1911. The Chinese forces were driven out by the Tibetan army. Even after defeat, China still was calling Tibet part of China. Soon, in the 1920's problems arose between the Dalai Lama and the Panchen lamas for political affairs. In 1933 the 13th Dalai Lama died. According to tradition a new Dalai Lama was found, a peasant boy. Communist took control of China's political affairs in 1949. Chinese forces entered Tibet again in 1950. China still has the country of Tibet in their hands today.

The life experiences of ordinary Tibetans varied tremendously depending on their social category (landed farmer, landless farmer, servant, untouchable, carpenter, nun, etc.) as well as on personal differences in values and attitudes. The TOHAP will provide a unique in-depth window on how diverse Tibetans lived their lives in the traditional society and how their lives changed after the Chinese government ended the traditional system and implemented socialist reforms and institutions after the 1959 uprising. There is an urgency to this undertaking as time is literally running out to conduct such research. Individuals from the traditional era (pre-1959) are aging and the number of potential subjects is dwindling. Few Tibetans live much beyond their mid/late 70s and a person who was 30 years of age in 1959 is today 71 years of age. Consequently, unless a project such as this is conducted soon, this cohort will pass and their "accounts" will be gone forever. We are, therefore, on the verge of losing a critical part of Tibetan history¾ the voices of ordinary Tibetans and an accurate understanding of the diversity of life as it was lived in Tibet. The goal of this project is to fill this enormous gap.

Introduction Recent events in Tibet have intensified the dispute over its legal status. The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims that Tibet is an integral part of China. The Tibetan Government-in-Exile maintains that Tibet is an independent state under unlawful occupation. The question is highly relevant for at least two reasons. First, if Tibet is under unlawful Chinese occupation, Beijing's large-scale transfer of Chinese settlers into Tibet is a serious violation of the fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which prohibits the transfer of civilian population into occupied territory. Second, if Tibet is under unlawful Chinese occupation, China's illegal presence in the country is a legitimate object of international concern. If, on the other hand, Tibet is an integral part of China, then these questions fall, as China claims, within its own domestic jurisdiction. The issue of human rights, including the right of self-determination and the right of the Tibetan people to maintain their own identity and autonomy are, of course, legitimate objects of international concern regardless of Tibet's legal status.
