Ski Jumping
Legendary Norwegian nordic athlete Sondre Nordheim is credited with the first officially measured ski jump in 1860. The first ski jumping contest was held in Trysil, Norway, in 1862. Throughout the mid-1800s, ski jumping was part of ski carnivals in Norway, but the sport gained added prestige when, in 1892, the Norwegian royal family decided to donate the "King's Cup" trophy to the winner of the annual meet held in Holmenkollen. Norwegian emigrants brought the sport to the United States and the first ski jumping meet in the U.S took place Feb. 8, 1887. It was won by Norwegian emigrant Mikkel Hemmestvedt.

Competition
On the normal and large hill, each competitor takes two official jumps, which are scored for distance and style. The scores for each jump are added together and the competitor with the highest total after the two rounds is declared the winner. The distance the jumper leaps is measured along the curve of the landing hill from the takeoff point to the point between the jumper's two feet as he first touches the hill. Style points for each jump are evaluated on a scale of to 20 by five International Ski Federation-appointed judges

The A Section:
It's not just for current events any more!
The A SECTION gives the most important news of the day at the state, national, and international levels. A fast-breaking local news story may be in this section as well. Social studies teachers use this section to teach geographical concepts and history as it happens. Language arts teachers model newspaper writing to improve students' writing skills, to show comprehension of events, to insure clarity and accuracy in reporting, and to link with literary works. It also features the EDITORIAL PAGE with a multitude of opportunities to teach your students critical thinking skills such as differentiating between fact and opinion, understanding bias, problem-solving, and decision-making. Editorials, columns, and cartoons provide essential insight into the newspaper's philosophy and purpose. The WEATHER section appears on the last page of the local section and offers a wealth of science, geography, and math opportunities for teachers. The News-Journal also features a BUSINESS SECTION daily. For teachers of mathematics, social studies, economics, and participants in the Florida Stock Market Game, this section is invaluable. It covers international, national and local business news and trends as well as stock and bond market listings.

    new, tougher league
Middle schoolers Tommy Lange, C.J. Jung, Mike Croghan and Patrick Heitman have a special position among the 4,000 St. Louis-area boys playing club hockey this year. First, they are the only holdovers from the Affton American Pee-Wee team that won the 12-and-under Missouri state championship last spring. The rest of the players moved on to older age groups. Second, this season, their team is moving to a new, tougher league. The Affton team will be the only Missouri pee-wee team in the league with others from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. They are all looking forward to the tougher schedule this year.
C.J. Jung Heitman said, “We’ll see how our talent matches up. It will be more interesting.” He is a student at Seckmann Junior High. The team got a taste of tougher competition when it represented Missouri in a regional pee-wee tournament last spring. Their experience was mixed. Lange is a student at Rockwood South Middle School. He said, “We got killed in the tournament in the regional finals.”

    Youth Hunter Challenge
Teenagers John Marshall, Danielle Metzger and Cameron Hall started hunting when they were 10 and 11 years of age. This year, they’ve entered a Missouri tournament that tests their all-around outdoor skills and understanding. The goal is to win the Missouri Youth Hunter Education Challenge championship. The competition tests seven different outdoor skills. The categories include shooting light hunting rifles, shotguns, muzzle-loading rifles and bow and arrow. Also there are tests on orienteering, wildlife identification and hunter responsibility.
Danielle Metzger Danielle is 14 and a 9th grader at Parkway South High School. This will be her second try in the state competition. She said, “Last year, I scored pretty high in the rifle competition and did pretty well in orienteering.” Orienteering involves finding your way in the woods with only a compass and a topographical map. That’s a map with hills and valleys marked but no street or highway signs. John is 13 and an 8th grader who is home schooled. He said, “My godfather took me to an outdoor camp where I heard about the state competition. I applied when I got back.”
