A little introduction...
For many years I have traveled all around Brazil, teaching classes and
workshops, spreading to many cities the knowledge that I have been learning
during all these years of work and study. In those trips, I feel that
students have the necessity of information: they look for,
they need and they don't get. Tap Dance is increasing in Brazil every day, but there are no books, no
bibliography in Portuguese, and there are few courses and festivals. Tap Dance in Brazil is losing its history, each teacher teaches what he can, what he learned, what he heard, sometimes what he invents. New styles are borning, and it is a very good fact ! But the essence of tap needs to be the same. Tap history, the evolution of tap dance is an unique language, and has to be respected.

Initially, tap is wonderful way for students to learn the counts of music while dancing. Even though we all can "feel" the changes and rhythm of music, breaking that music down in to counts promotes understanding of its basic elements. It is impossible to understand tap without counting 1 and a 2 and e uh 3 and 4, etc. When that counting skill transfers to ballet and baton twirling it produces dancers and baton twirlers who can stay on beat even when that beat may be esoteric. Tap is history, America, and fun. Tap actually has a limited vocabulary. Once a student has mastered about eight fundamentals everything else builds on them. We just go faster and faster. I will often combine tap dance with jazz dance.

tap dance's Irish Roots. The story of tap dance begins with Uncle JimLowe, a black dancer who performed jigs and reels in saloons.
http://www.iol.ie/~ronolan/tapdance.html
Tap Dance's Irish Roots That dance challenge between Irish and black dancers in 'Riverdance' isn't something invented to woo American audiences. The links between Irish and tap dancing run deep in the immigrant tradition of 19th century America. The black dancers borrowed steps and rhythms from the Irish, blending an art form which was later to find expression in vaudeville and the spectacular choreography of American cinema.
In the earlier part of the century the Irish and blacks occupied the lowest rung of the American ladder. In an article in the 'International Tap Newsletter', Jane Goldberg writes that tap "came out of the lower classes, developed in competitive 'battles' on street corners by Irish immigrants and African American slaves." Another writer in the newsletter suggested that only in the great American melting pot "could Irish jigs combine with African shuffles and sand dances to form an entirely new and exciting art form." According to writer and critic Clive Barnes: "It was the Irish clog dancers who started tap dancing, but these Irish forms were clearly grafted onto existing slave dances that came directly from Africa."
An early feature of this story was the solo spectacular of Johnny Durang (1768-1822), a dance master in Philadelphia, who first established the step dance as a theatrical dance through his performance of the hornpipe. He was also the first Irish person we know of to blacken his face for performances.

: The following assessment is to be made of the student by observation over a period of time, through a testing situation set up by the teacher, or through a submitted video tape of student performance. This should be evaluated using a variety of recordings. The student in the meets standard level should perform sequences previously practiced and which are considered easy and moderate difficulty by professional dance educators and performers. The student in the advanced level should perform sequences previously practiced and which are considered moderate and advanced difficulty by professional dance educators and performers.
Movements which should be evaluated include:
  • Basic combination steps: waltz time step, shuffle combination (7 sounds), step - chug, step - pull, buck time step
Students should be able to combine appropriate versions of the above movements into basic pre-learned sequences.

Tap dance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tap dance was born in the 19th century . It is most developed in the United States but is popular all around the world. The grandparents may well have been
  • Spanish flamenco , where nails are hammered into the front part of the dancers' shoes so that the rhythm of their steps can be heard Clog dancing , for example from Lancashire, where there may well be no accompanying music, just the noise of the shoes African welly boot dance African dance to drum rhythms.
  • Tap is a terrific art form where the performer is both dancer and musician.
    History
Tap dance probably began in the mid 1800s (1850? to 1870?) in New York City as a fusion of African, Irish, Scottish, and English step dances. Dancers from different immigant groups would get together and compete and show off their best moves. As the dances fused, a new American style emerged.
