ISLANDS Explore the FACTS, INFORMATION and culture of the other islands of An Internetworkof Travel and Tourism Guides for the Main Islands of tahiti Polynesia
http://www.papeete.com/about.html
Although travelers visit Tahiti for a variety of reasons, newcomers are often quite naive about most of the facts and facets of the Island, including its people, culture, flora and fauna, history, economy, etc. They often arrive with the simple desire to just relax and take in the Pacific Island charm. Not long after arriving, however, does the true nature of French Polynesia begin to unfold for them.
A couple of days on Tahiti or exploring the city of Papeete and they begin to recognize the country for its many faces beyond a mere vacationland. This French owned territory is filled with a unique energy unto itself. There's no place on earth quite like it.
Of course return travelers and local inhabitants know that. Each lives or returns to Tahiti for their own reasons...
This page unviels information, facts, and insight for discovery of your OWN reasons to become enchanted with Tahiti, her capital city of Papeete, and her fantastic surrounding islands.

Let's face it. The Tahitian islands are all about relaxation. The Polynesian lifestyle assures that.
With the exception of just a few sports activities, people on the Island of Tahiti just aren't in a hurry, no matter what they're doing!
(Ok, the City of Papeete does seem to be the exception here, but that's what makes Tahiti so interesting!)
This page is here to help you with the RELAXING activities on the island of Tahiti- OUTSIDE THE HUSTLING, BUSTLING URBAN CENTER OF PAPEETE...
In addition to simply reading a book, laying out on a blanket on a beach, or taking a stroll, we offer a few more ideas here...

Taking a stand in Polynesia
Refusing to wear anything but traditional dress is Tahitian native Clement Pito's way of protesting what he calls French occupation of his land. Tahiti and its Polynesian neighbors have long been prizes of colonizing nations. Tahiti has been under French control since 1842 and a French colony since 1880. Its neighbors share a similar history. But Tahitians say it is not their land that is in danger it is their culture. The French language, French culture and French merchandise are everywhere you look in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on Tahiti giving it an atmosphere and appearance of a French provincial town, with palm trees. In 1767, when British sailors became the first Europeans to drop anchor in Matavai Bay, they were greeted by people whose culture was completely different from their own. Each ship returned to Europe with amazing stories of feasting and dancing, and of beautiful, exotic people. The stories inspired artists and writers with the philosophical ideal of the "noble savage."

Tahiti pictures is here for one purpose - to show the islands in their raw natural form as you and I will see them and not as they appear in glossy tourist brochures. I travelled around Tahiti in 1 week, visiting the main islands of Tahiti and Moorea and taking in the major tourist sights and snapping these photos along the way. These are real pictures of real holiday views - sights on the beaten track, nothing set up, no models, not always perfect skies. I hope by viewing this website you will be encouraged to enjoy these stunning scenes in person - to feel the warmth of the pristine tropical rainforest, to hear the cascading waterfalls, smell the sweel scent of flowers and watch the lap against the white sandy beaches ...
Each Tahiti Island has its distinct attractions. Throughout the show we provide links to detailed travel guides and accommodation directories so you can plan and book your holidays ...

CULTURE DESTINATION GUIDE:
as featured in The Art of the Polynesian Tatau
Tattooing is an integral part of the Tahitan culture and has been practiced since 1500 BC. The western word tattoo is taken from the Tahiti word " tatau " meaning open wound! A tattoo represent a girl's sexual maturity, tribe rank and other social symbols. Tahiti woman would traditionally tattoo their loins and buttocks deep blue, taken up also by some of the HMS Bounty Mutineers during their wild extended stay on the islands. Missionaries tried to stamp out this sinful celebration of the flesh, but it has recently enjoyed a renaissance on home turf. The tradition was kept alive in Samoa, and revived in the 1980's in its old form in Tahiti along with other ancient "supressed" arts like firewalking, chanting and dance
A traditional tattoo is made from a bone containing between 3 and 20 needles. The needles are then dipped in a pigment made from soot of burnt candlenut mixed with water and oil. The needle is tapped against the skin with a wooden stick causing the skin to be punctured. This practice was banned in 1986 but traditional artists developed a machine constructed from an electric shaver to avoid risk of disease and this practice is in place today.
Designs used in the tattoos were often the same as the other decorative arts like wood carving, decorated gourds and painted barkcloth. Most designs are based around nature like shellfish, birds or shark's tooth. They may also relate to legends of specific island tribes. Each tribe would carry their own design or body placement of familiar motif, lke the Maori tribes spiral pattern of a tree fern, unique in the Pacific. Tattos are ancestral and tribespeople do not like to parade their tattoos to outsiders. A higher ranking individual would have more tattoos that an ordinary tribes man.

Australian William Reed is one of Tahiti's black pearl pioneers, having started up Tahiti Perles, which he sold in 1975 to Robert Wan, who has made it Tahiti's biggest private pearl producer today. Reed worked in Tahiti from 1967-1973 as a biologist with the government's Fisheries Department. His most recent visit to Tahiti was for the October 1996 Poe Rave Nui Auction, during which he bought one lot of 633 pearls for his company, Pearlconsult in Broome, Western Australia. During that visit, Reed agreed to trace the history of pearl oyster and pearl culture experiments conducted in French Polynesia prior to 1975. In describing the background to Tahiti's pearl culture industry, Reed noted that "about 1900 Simon Grand, an oyster farmer from Arcachon, came to Tahiti and experimented in several lagoons and eventually in the Gambier Islands, where he had some success in collecting spat and growing
